Henry Saichi “Jay” Arii, 78, of Waipahu, a retired Aloha Airlines quality control department executive, died in Honolulu. He was born in Wahiawa. He is survived by brother Harvey; sisters Hazel Ho, Mildred Kipu, Violet Arakaki and Gertrude Nakamura; 23 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. JERRY H. BENTLEY
Passed away on July 15, 2012 at age 62 in Honolulu. Named a Pioneer in World History by the World History Association, he was a leading scholar who helped change the institutional landscape of the field of world history. He taught at the University of Hawai’i throughout his academic career and authored several influential books and articles, and co-authored a successful world history textbook, currently in its fifth edition. He also helped found and edited the Journal of World History for 22 years, the leading scholarly publication in the field. He was born in 1949 in Alabama and spent much of his youth in Chattanooga, Tennessee before graduating from the Univ. of Tennessee in 1971 and completing his doctorate at the University of Minnesota in 1976. For 6 years he also served as Distinguished Visiting Professor at Capitol Normal University, Beijing, China. He was considered legendary in the lore of graduate students: brilliant, tough and fair. He also helped create the world history content benchmarks in Hawaii state public education for grades 6 and high school, which are still in use today. He is survived by his beloved wife Carol Mon Lee; stepson Michael Lee Shinn; parents Ina Mae “Billie” Harrell Bentley and William Carey Bentley, brother Murry Bentley and his wife Linda Clark, and brother Larry Bentley and his wife Caroline Caulkin Bentley. A Celebration of Jerry H. Bentley will be held at the Bishop Museum’s Atherton Halau on Sunday, October 21, 2012, 2:00 informal gathering, 3:00 formal program. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to UH Foundation, PO Box 11270, Honolulu, HI 96828-0270 for the Jerry Bentley Scholarship Fund to support world history study.

October 2, 1929 – October 9, 2012 William Louis “Hax” Haxton, 83, of Honolulu, passed away peacefully at his home October 9th. He is survived by his wife Beryl Martin Haxton, son Michael Haxton (Yvonne), daughter Sheryl Haxton Sims (Alan) and three grandchildren, Travis Haxton, Tristyn Haxton Lane (Jonah), Lauren Sims, and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held Friday, October 19th, at 10AM at the Outrigger Canoe Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
