Paul Edwin “Pappy” Gruwell, 78, of Honolulu, an electrical engineer, died in Leahi Hospital. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa. He is survived by wife Caroline “Carrie” Moniz; sons Gregory, Gary, Glen “Pat” and Grant; daughters Gina Gruwell and Jona Ayres; stepsons Jeffery and George Moniz; stepdaughters Kari Monte, Claire Menges and Christie Arquette; brother Robert “Bob” Gruwell; 24 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Visitation: 10 a.m. Monday at the Elks Club in Waikiki. Celebration of life: 11 a.m. Scattering of ashes to follow. Casual attire.
