Anna Bachman Barton

ANNA BACHMAN BARTON Anna Bachman Barton passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of November 22, 2012 due to natural causes. “Anne,” as she was called by her friends and family, was a loving mother of 4 daughters. She was born on July 10, 1917 in Pennsylvania as Anna Martha Bukowski. She graduated East Stroudsburg University with a Bachelor’s Degree and later earned her Master’s Degree at UCLA. Anne was a Veteran of WWII and had held the rank of First Lieutenant. She married Clyde Orion Bachman in Reading, Pennsylvania where she gave birth to 2 daughters. They moved to Playa del Rey, California in 1953, had 2 more daughters and raised the children in their home near the ocean. Anne loved living near the beach. Anne was a sports enthusiast and played golf and went bowling with Clyde. She pitched softball during college and professionally. Anne taught Physical Education at Hawthorne High School for 23 years. Retiring in 1976 she moved to Honolulu Hawaii. Anne met George Barton in Waikiki and they were married in 1987. Anne and George enjoyed playing tennis together and walking to all the events in Waikiki. Anne is loved by her family and she lived a long and accomplished life. While she will be missed, we will all remember Anne with positive thoughts. Anne is survived by 4 daughters: Carol, Gerri, Wynnie and Jill; and 2 sons-in-law: Mark and Dennis. Also 7 grandchildren: Duane, Joleen, Kelsey, Damon, Kyle, Elia, Arielle, and 6 great- grandchildren, Taylor, Brooke, Nicholas, Natalie, Taylor and Kylie. 84, of Honolulu, passed away November 19 at the Queen’s Medical Center. Born in Canton, China (Lung Doo Chung Tow Village) on August 8, 1928. Worked as a trimmer at Dole cannery, a factory seamstress, and a typesetter at a Chinese newspaper company. Predeceased by her husband, the Reverend Albert Quon Mu Chun. Survived by her sons, Albert (Laura) Chun and Bruce (Jenny) Chun; daughters, Gloria (Gary) Fletcher, Priscilla (Hilton) Higa and Caroyl (Brian) Hirose; brothers, Cheuk Kei Cheung and Zhuo Hui Zhang; sister, Shu Ping Zhang Wong; sisters-in-law, T.M. Yuen Chun and Goldie Chun Shannon; eleven grandchildren, Brycen (Felicia), Barryn, James (Karen), Melissa (Victor), Stephanie, Kimberly, Aaron, Jamie, Kellie, Tiffany, and Jayson; five great grand- children, Audrey, Isabella, Jack, Madeline and Victor Jr.; as well as many nieces and nephews. JOSEPH (BUSTER) ARUDA Age 72 of Waimanalo, Hi, passed peacefully on Sunday, November 25, 2012. Survived by beloved wife, Norma Jean, sons Joey and Jeffery (Georgene), brother Heine Aruda (Gladys), mother-in-law Mildred Souza, as well as, many dear family members and close friends. Buster was an avid fisherman and loved the ocean. He loved his dogs, Lacy, Loki, Rosie, and especially his favorite, Lexi, who will be with him. Jan. 27, 1951- Nov. 19, 2012 Robin Nelson, 61, of Mill Valley, moved on to his next great adventure November 19, with his wife Aniko and daughters Taylour and Briana at his side. Robin courageously battled Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), retaining his sense of humor, friendships, curiosity, and remarkable appreciation for the world and people around him. His kindness and gentle humor will be missed. Robin was born and raised in Mill Valley, California where he enjoyed participating in Little League and excelled at baseball and football at Tamalpais High School. He graduated from University of California, Berkeley in 1973 and began his career as a golf course architect. In 1983 he moved to Hawaii where joined Belt Collins, and established the golf course architecture arm of the firm, Nelson & Wright Golf Course Architects, now known as Nelson & Haworth Golf Course Architects. He and his company designed golf courses worldwide, many throughout Hawaii and the Pacific Rim. His courses were particularly well known for their incorporation of and respect for the natural environment. He met and inspired people through his work, but also touched many lives with his humor, grace, and enthusiastic approach to life. After nearly 17 years in Hawaii, Robin and his wife Aniko moved to Mill Valley in 2000 where he continued designing golf courses both in Hawaii and Southeast Asia, as Robin Nelson, Golf Course Architect. He is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife Aniko, daughters Taylour and Briana, brothers Bill and Peter, their wives Ann and Debbie, and his nieces and nephew Andrea, Kelley and Emmett. A memorial service will be held Friday, December 7 at 2 pm at the Outdoor Art Club, 1 West Blithedale Avenue in Mill Valley. June 2, 1941-November 9, 2012 He fought the good fight, but James “Jimmy” Ruiz Aranita was called home by the Lord on Friday, November 9, 2012. He passed away at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Moanalua. Born on June 2, 1941 in Kunia, James was the last child of Martin and Bibiana Aranita in a family of 12 (9 boys and 3 girls). He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings: Sophie Tadly, Benito, David, Robert, Albert, Anthony, and Jolita. He is survived by his wife of 41 years Arlene Gamayo Aranita and his siblings Ralph, Ronald, Rafael, and Sister Rosita, many nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, grand-nieces, great grandnephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and mother-in-law Catalina Gamayo. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Waipahu High School, and the Electronics Institute of Hawaii. He also served in the U.S. Army. After 27 years as an insulator (Iagger), he retired from the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard on January 15, 2000. His interests included basketball; diving for lobster, tako, and fish; singing; kung fu movies; and shooting craps in Las Vegas. In the past years, as his health began to decline, he never lost his passion for life and never complained. He was always a kind and gentle man who will always be on our minds and forever in our hearts. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 7, 2012, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church at 1525 Waimano Home Road in Pearl City. LAWRENCE H. BORGES, SR. Lawrence H. Borges, Sr., 82, of Carson City, NV, passed away on November 4, 2012, at his home. Lawrence was born on May 27, 1930, in Paia. He graduated from St. Anthony High School, Class of 1948. A letter carrier at the Kahului Post Office, and longtime resident of Makawao, he retired and moved to Carson City in 1993. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he also served in Korea and Vietnam. A faithful Catholic, he enjoyed attending St. Joseph’s Church in Makawao, as well as his time in the Holy Name Society there. Due to his age and years of service, he was an Honorary Life Member, 4th Degree, of the Knights of Columbus, Maui Council 2290. Lawrence was preceded in death by his father, Henry; mother, Lucy; brother, Joseph; and his wife, Josephine. He is survived by sons Lawrence H. Jr. and Gary; daughters, Joni Pinedo and Debra Watts; stepsons, Shawn H. and Darrick Tsuha; 14 grand- children; as well as numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends. A beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend, he will be missed by all. Private services will be held Thursday, December 6, 2012 on Oahu.

The family of Bert Takeshi Higa is deeply saddened to announce his sudden passing on November 6, 2012 at the age of 64. He is survived by his devoted wife Janice (Urabe) Higa, his special and close friend son Chad, his beloved sister Gladys Higa, and his treasured pets Taffy and Yuki. Bert was born on September 20, 1948 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He worked tirelessly for over 40 years at the Honolulu Advertiser. He eventually rose to become a Supervising Night Pressman. When Gannett sold the Honolulu Advertiser to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, he was re-hired by the new company, retaining his position as Supervising Night Pressman. He was a fair and well-liked supervisor. Bert’s passions were bowling and golfing. After the birth of his son, he devoted his waking hours to care for his son. He tutored his son in basketball, volleyball, baseball, and golfing. In later life, he returned to the sport he loved, golfing. He enjoyed tremendously his golfing trips yearly to the neighbor islands with family and lifetime friends. His family, relatives, and friends will miss his good, loving, and joking nature and his generosity.
