DR. STEVEN KEITH DEWITT

DR. STEVEN KEITH DEWITT
64, of Kaneohe, HI, died December 26, 2012 in Kailua, HI. Born August 7, 1948 in Monett, MO. At the time of his death he was the Acting Medical Director of the Halawa Correctional Facility. He received his undergraduate degree with distinction from the University of Hawaii at Manoa; his Doctor of Medicine from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO., and completed the UH Integrated Medical Residency Program. He practiced Internal Medicine in Ohio, Virginia, and Hawaii. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Beth” Wyld DeWitt; parents, Keith and Evelyn DeWitt; children, Keith, Ryan and Jason Payne; five siblings and their spouses: Mike and Ruthann DeWitt, Jan and Ed Watson, Gary and Mary DeWitt, Tricia and Jay McKay, and Beth and Jeff Hyde; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. DeWitt lived a life of service and will be greatly missed by his patients, colleagues, friends and family. Services in Hawaii and Missouri will be announced at a later date.

DONALD SHU CHONG YOUNG
75, of Honolulu, died on December 22, 2012 at Kaiser Medical Center Moanalua. He was born on July 8, 1937 in Honolulu. From kindergarten through the 8th grade, Donald was educated at Keanae School in Maui where he spent his boyhood years. Upon graduating from St. Louis College, as a member of the Class of 1955, Donald went on to Chaminade University, then to the University of San Francisco where he attained his B.A. in Accounting. Starting out as an employee of First Hawaiian Bank, then onto Bishop Trust, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Naval Supply Center, Donald finally retired in 2000 as a Systems Analyst for the Defense Finance and Accounting Services on Ford Island. Donald enjoyed fishing, diving, bowling and softball when he was younger. After retiring, he especially loved going on cruises each year and looked forward to his annual salmon fishing trip to Alaska. He loved listening to Hawaiian music at home, in the car and even on his iPod while traveling on the airplane. Don will be fondly remembered for his generosity, his friendly demeanor and for being genuinely kind and caring to others. He was a gentle, helpful person who had a wonderful outlook on life. Don was a loving husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, cousin and dear friend who will be deeply missed by all. Survived by his wife of 50 years: Marjorie; sons: Darrell (Jamie) and Kevin (Carolyn); daughter: Carrie Lei; grandsons: Carson and Zachary; brother: Alexander In; and sisters: Leilani (Peter) Muzio, Alexis (Sam) Souza, and Betty Jane (Allan) Fisher. Visitation 9-10:30 a.m., Eulogy 10:30-11 a.m., with Mass 11 a.m. to noon on Friday, January 11, 2013 at St. Philomena Church at 3300 Ala Laulani St in Salt Lake; followed by burial at 2 p.m. at Hawaiian Memorial Park.

WINSTON SEIJI MIYAHIRA

WINSTON SEIJI MIYAHIRA
94, formerly of Kahului, Maui, passed away on Nov. 26, 2012 at Hale Ola Kino in Honolulu. He was born in Waipahu on January 19, 1918 but lived on Maui for most of his life. Winston graduated from Maui High School in 1936 and held several positions with the Dept. of Education at Hana Elementary & High School, Haiku School, and Puunene School. In 1941, he joined the County of Maui’s Clerk’s Office and later the County Attorney’s Office. Between 1949 and 1976, he served as the Director of Liquor Control for Maui County, and became the first Asian American to hold the post of President of the National Conference of State Liquor Administrators. He was one of the organizers of the HGEA on Maui and held leadership positions in its Retirees Unit; he also chaired the Kanaha Preserve Advisory Commission, and was active with the Maui Adult Day Care Center, Boy Scouts of America, State Library Board, Paia School Alumni Association, Maui Lions Club and Lions International. He was a long-time member of Kahului Union Church and active with the Hawaii Conference and Tri-Isle Association of the United Church of Christ. He was a wonderful husband, father, mentor and friend. He is survived by wife, Ethel; sons, Dale (Edna) and Michael (Stella); daughter, Sheryl Nicholson; brothers, Willard, Harrison, and Wilfred; sisters, Haruno Tamashiro, Eleanor Arakawa and Thelma Oshiro; one granddaughter (Marissa Miyahira). Family service held. Service of remembrance to be held on Friday, January 11, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Kahului Union Church; visitation at 9:30 a.m. Aloha attire.

JUANITA KALAHAU’OLI GERAKAS (NEE STEPHEN)
Age 84 of Honolulu, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2012 with her beloved husband of 62 years and six months at her side. An alumna of St. Andrew’s Priory and the University of Hawaii, she was a retired DOE teacher at Haha’ione Elementary School. Her Hawaiian name Kalahau’oli means “Happy Day,” which is a perfect description of the gifts she gave every day of her quick wit, personality plus, generosity, empathy, wisdom, intellect, and unconditional love. She will be deeply missed by her husband Andrew, a Deacon at Star of the Sea Church for 31 years. She was lovingly cared for by her youngest son John who carries on her legacy of aloha. The two of them enjoyed many pastimes (movies, barbeques, music, driving, etc.) and laughs. They also embodied the personality of the family with multiple lifelong friends. Her oldest son, Michael, who was an only child for his first fourteen years, shared a special communication bond with her and inherited her dedication to family. She was the BFF of her daughter Mary who was blessed to have her as a role model. Survived by her beloved family including her husband Andrew, sons Michael (Lydia) and John and daughter Mary (Geoffrey) Wellein. Also survived by her grandchildren David (Kayleigh) Gerakas and Maria Kalahau’oli Gerakas, Max Andrew Wellein and Stephen Wellein who loved their “Nana” dearly. She is also survived by her loving sister Edna Lai Hipp and an extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and great nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at 9:30am on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Star of the Sea Catholic Church with Mass and reception to follow. Burial will be held on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 11:00am at Kaneohe Veterans Cemetary. Aloha attire. No flowers please.

“WE WILL NEVER FORGET” Age 87, of Oregon formerly of Honolulu, passed away November 29, 2012 in Oregon. Born April 22, 1925 in Hawaii. Served in the U.S. Army for 22 years and retired as SFC (E-7) as Head Chef for Seven Three and Four Star Generals who were Commanders-In-Chief of the Pacific Rim in Fort Shafter, Oahu. After retiring from the military, he worked on the Kwajalein, Atoll, Marshall Islands and managed various food establishments. He is survived by daughters, Annie Eissler of Oregon, Bernie (Ben) Kostick of Washington, Melonie Conselva of Honolulu; sons, Reggie (Jen) Amante of California, John (Roxanne) Amante of Ewa Beach; step-children, Walter Wailehua, Howard Wailehua, Marilyn Wailehua Kalua, Anna Chee, George Wailehua, Sonny Ferriera, Debbie Anoina; 9 grand- children; 13 great-grand- children.
