JAMES R. “DICK” BUNKER

JAMES R. DICK BUNKER
January 25, 1925 – January 6, 2013 James R. Bunker was born in Texas where he was a Boy Scout and earned the Eagle Scout medal. He was a Navy Seal and an Officer in World War II and was involved in the liberation of the Philippines. James, “Dick” Bunker, went to Rice University for his Baccalaureate degree and graduate school at the University of Texas, Austin. He become an executive of the YMCA and later served for 8 years at the Boy Scouts of America in Texas at the national level. Dick came to Hawai’i in1959, the start of statehood. Dick was an avid sailor and was a member of the Waikiki Yacht Club for over 50 years. Through his kind efforts and love for his fellow man, he used his 47ft. ketch, “the Kalani” to help build a network of good and loyal friends. Most of his professional career was with the American Cancer Society. He helped start the American Cancer Society in Arizona, Hawaii, Guam and American Samoa. As executive director of the American Cancer Society of Hawai’i, Dick helped raise funds for the organization. Dick’s ability to raise money for this cause was exceptional and the American Cancer Society recognized him for skills and leadership. Long after he retired from the American Cancer Society, Hawaii Division, Inc., Dick remained active on its board and continued to assist in fund raising. In 2010, the State Legislature honored Dick for his role in assisting the local chapter. Dick Bunker’s entire life was about sharing and giving. He died peacefully in his sleep on Jan. 6, 2013, just two weeks short of his 88th birthday. He is survived by a group of dear friends. He set up a James R. Bunker endowment scholarship at the University of Hawaii-Manoa and was also a strong supporter of the ACS, Hope Lodge, Hawaii. Services for the celebration of James R. Bunker’s life are set on Feb. 2nd at one of his favorite places, the Waikiki Yacht Club. His ashes will be scattered at sea. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, Hawaii 2370 Nuuanu Ave. Honolulu, HI 96817.
