FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

STEPHEN REID JEFFERIES
STEPHEN REID JEFFERIES Stephen Reid Jefferies lost his long battle with cancer on January 17, 2013. He is survived by his parents, John and Charmian Jefferies, his sister and brother-in-law Helen and Johnny Dearmore, his brother and sister-in-law Trevor and Shirley Jefferies, his devoted and adoring nephews Alex, Charlie, Nicholas, Ian and David, and his wife Margaret. Stephen was born in Sydney, Australia in 1952. When he was 11 his family moved to Hawaii, where he attended Punahou School. After graduation, he moved to the mainland, where he had many adventures traveling around in his old VW van and acquiring skills that he greatly enjoyed applying in later life. Enrolling in a few technical classes at Portland CC started him on a path which led to a degree from Portland State and then, in 1984, a Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, and a career that he absolutely loved. Steve returned to his beloved Hawaii in 1987 and became one of the first employees of Makai Ocean Engineering in Waimanalo. His patented software for laying communications and other cables underwater was a major contributor to the growth of the company. Steve was a renaissance man - engineer, scientist, mathematician, philosopher, politician, musician, craftsman, inventor, activist - but at heart, he was a genuine, caring human being. He will be sadly missed by all he touched with his warmth and kindness, and who loved him in return for his simple goodness. The last few years of his life were very difficult, but he bore them with dignity and strength, and with his characteristic good humor and thoughtfulness for others. May he rest in peace in Heaven with his beloved daughter, Angela, and his little sister, Gabrielle. Goodbye, dearest son and brother.

Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
