HARRIET A. GAY She received a B.A. degree from Russell Sage College, Troy, NY and a M.S. degree in English Literature from Brown University, Providence, RI. For many years she was a member of the Morning Music Club of Honolulu, hosting classical music concerts at her home in the Maunawili Valley featuring her 1895 Steinway Concert Grand Piano. Mrs. Gay was also an artist and author of short stories published in literary magazines such as the Kenyon Review, Texas Quarterly, Carolina Quarterly, Honolulu Magazine. She also published “The Julliard String Quartet” 1974 and a novel “Ode’s Den” 1996. She served on the staff of the Famous Writers School, Westport, Conn. STANLEY Y. HARAGA Age 95, of Honolulu, a retired General Contractor, passed away on February 8, 2013. He was born on May 21, 1917 in Olaa, Hawaii. He worked for Robert Kaya Builders then retired from Stanley Haraga Construction. His expertise was in building high rises, mainly in Waikiki. He was an avid fisherman and world traveler. He was a single digit golfer and a member of the Moanalua Golf Club. He is survived by sons, Rodney (Naomi) Haraga, Wayne Haraga; daughters, Nora (Edwin) Muramoto, Lorraine (Garold) Kashiwa; 7 grandchildren and 9 great- grandchildren. Joseph F. Souza Jr.

JOSEPH F. SOUZA, JR. Feb. 12, 2013 Joseph F. Souza, Jr., 83, of Maui, a retired U.S. Army Sergeant First Class, died peacefully surrounded by family at his daughter’s home. He was one of six children, born to Jose Souza, the first Fire Chief of Maui and Mary Souza (Castro) in Wailuku, Maui. Joseph attended St. Anthony’s Catholic School and continued a lifelong devotion to His Roman Catholic faith. He went to work at an early age to help his family, then enlisted in the Army at 17 and became a paratrooper. He was a wartime veteran of WWII and Vietnam. He was also a combat veteran of the Korean Conflict, and Purple Heart recipient. He was also awarded the Soldier’s Medal for (Heroism) for saving the life of a drowning swimmer at Sandy Beach, Oahu. He married Lorraine Souza (Camacho), Miss Waikiki, in 1951. One of his many hobbies was bodybuilding, earning him the title Mr. Armed Forces. He also loved spear fishing, shell collecting, Sculpturing, and wood carving. He is survived by wife Lorraine (Camacho) Souza, of Honolulu; nine sons and daughters, Charles (Tiare) Souza of Hilo, Mary (Greg) Gagne of Potomac Falls, Va., Starlette Bauer of San Diego, John (Suzanne) Souza of Hilo, Celeste R. Souza of Waikaloa, Mark Souza, Paul Souza, and James Souza, all of Honolulu, Carolyn (Steven) Conner of Gresham, Or. Sister Elsie Furtado of Wailuku, Maui, and brother Edward Souza of Makawao, Maui. He was preceded in death by brother Albert Souza, sister Elizabeth (Souza) Lake, and infant brother Joseph, all of Maui. He has 29 and three hanai grandchildren, 46 great- grandchildren, and four hanai and two great-great-grand- children, and many nieces and nephews. May the mercy of God, grant unto you eternal rest. Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Walden

ELIZABETH (BETTY) ANN WALDEN Age 77, passed away on February 20th, 2013. She was born in Rockland, Maine, on August 28, 1935, the daughter of Frank and Rena Call. Betty graduated from Orono High school in 1953, and Gorham State Teachers’ College in 1957. She was a first grade teacher for a few years prior to meeting her future husband William Walden, who was an officer in the Navy. They were married in July of 1962 at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, and went to Kauai for their honeymoon. She lived in Hawaii for over 40 years, with fifteen years in Volcano on the Big Island, and most of the rest near Hawaii Kai on Oahu. She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and she loved wired-hair fox terriers. She is preceded in death by her husband, Commander William Walden USN, and her sister, Jayne. She is survived by her two sons, John and James Walden, her grandchildren, Nathan and Malia Walden, and her sisters, Rita Desjardins and Sandra Jenness. She was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous with 25 years sober. A memorial service will be held, Saturday, March 2nd, 2pm, at Franklin Hill Foursquare Church in Yakima, WA. Another memorial service will be in Honolulu, Saturday, March 9th, 2pm, at Waiokeola Congregational Church, 4705 Kilauea Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to WWW.ALZ.org for Alzheimer’s research.
