FONG, CAPTAIN CHONG SUM, USN RET. CLINT, CHONGIE
Of Milwaukee, WI , formerly of Honolulu, age 83, passed away peacefully at his home Feb. 16, 2013. Loving husband of Dr. Mary Quinn, Clint was the proud father of their children, Patrick and Stephen. Predeceased by brothers Ah Ping, Jack and Franklin; and sisters Mary Wong, Annie Young and Betty Keoneula, he is dearly remembered by his sister, Violet Ching (Dr. Donald) of Honolulu. Clint was “Uncle Sum” to many loving nephews and nieces and “adopted” uncle to numerous Navy families. Chong Sum held advanced degrees in math, physics and nuclear engineering from Cal Poly and Naval Postgraduate School. “Chongie” was always proud of his humble beginnings at Central Intermediate and Mc Kinley High School. Captain Fong served 28 years in the US Navy with distinction; decorated twice with both the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service medal and once with the Navy Commendation Medal. He was Commanding Officer of NAVSEEACTPAC, Pearl Harbor and Officer in Charge at NAVSEEACT, Japan, and proudly served as Engineering officer on the USS Walker and USS Cavalier. Interment with full military honors March 8 at Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner, WI. A celebration of Clint’s life will take place on Sunday, March 17th Milwaukee. RAYMOND MITSUYOSHI KAWANO, 86

RAYMOND MITSUYOSHI KAWANO,
86 Private services were held for Raymond Mitsuyoshi Kawano, who passed away on January 21, 2013, at the Kuakini Geriatric Center. Kawano, a retired police sergeant served with the Honolulu Police Department for 28 years. A 1944 Farrington High School graduate, he served in the US Air Force before joining the HPD. As a member of the Juvenile Crime Prevention Division, he served as a coordinator and a driving force in the development of the Police Activities League (PAL). His leadership and dedicated service to Hawaii’s youth through the many PAL programs earned him many honors and awards from the HPD, the State Legislature, and community groups. Holding a 6th degree black belt in judo, Kawano also played a vital role in establishing the self-defense training program for HPD recruits. Following retirement, Kawano continued to be involved with the many PAL activities and the judo community. He continued to enjoy handball at Nuuanu Y and golfing with friends. He also spent time supporting his two grand- children in their many activities. Kawano is survived by wife Mildred, daughter Kathleen Saito (Sanford), grandchildren Holly and Reid, and brother Hide.

ROSS, JANE A. Joined her Lord and Savior on Sunday February 24th, 2013 at the age of 84. Jane is preceded in death by her parents Francis and Mary Ross, and dearest friend Martha Makaiwi. She is survived by her brother Joseph (Julie), nephews Frank Ross (Lori) and Richard Ross, grandnephew Brady Ross, and dear friend Louella King. She is remembered for her dedication to education and her great love of animals, especially her pet dog Vinny and her pet cat Muffy. Jane served as the principal for over 20 years at Hickam Elementary, where the library was dedicated and named in her honor, The Jane A. Ross Learning Center. The viewing and mass will be held on March 14th at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, located at 1525 Waimano Home Rd. The viewing is from 10-11:30 AM, followed by mass at 11:30 AM. The burial with a graveside service will follow at the Valley of the Temples, located at 47-200 Kahekili Hwy.
