MERVIN FRANCIS GILLILAND
“Merv” passed to heaven on April 1 after a full 90 years of life. Born in 1922 to Frank and Louise Copp Gilliland, Merv grew up in Kalihi and Kaimuki. He enjoyed summers diving, fishing, and working at his Grandpa’s ranch in Maili and later at the family beach house at Mokapu. Merv was a Roosevelt Rough Rider, Class of 1940, he attended U.H. and was a U.S. Army veteran. In 1957, Mervin married Olga Maria Vanderborght who was originally from Belgium. Merv and Olga truly enjoyed their 55 years together in Hawaii nei, raising a family, hosting parties for family, friends and visitors from afar, travelling to Europe and other destinations. Merv retired as an Amfac Executive Vice President in 1986. Over a 35 year career, he covered much ground participating in development efforts on former Oahu Sugar lands from Halawa to Waikele, and and outer island projects including the Waiohai Hotel on Kauai, The King Kamehameha Hotel in Kona and the Ka’anapali Resort. Mervin is survived by his loving wife Olga, brother Leroy, sons Mark and Guy (Sherry), daughter Elizabeth (Jess) Snow, grandchildren Michele, Marcus Aukai, Marin Gilliland and Annie Ilikea and Ryder Snow. Please join us at Merv’s Celebration of Life on the Windward side, Saturday May 11, at the Koolau Center beneath the Pali Lookout, situated on Kionaole Road, just off the Kamehameha Hwy and H-3 interchange.
