ROBERT “BOB” O. DAME

ROBERT BOB O. DAME 92, died peacefully on May 14, 2013 at the Pohai Nani Care Center in Kaneohe. Bob was born on October 2, 1920 in Garden City, Long Island, New York to Frank L. and Mary Elizabeth (Elvidge) Dame. His two older brothers, Frank E. Dame and Edward L. Dame, predeceased him. Bob graduated from Garden City High and Cornell University (’42), and later received his MA degree in engineering from Stanford (’47), where he met his future wife, Jacklyn Hogan. He served in the Pacific during WWII as a civilian engineer with US military forces. After the war, Bob lived in S. California, where he worked for Bendix Corp, developing air-to-air missiles. His six children were born there. In 1960, he transferred to work at the Pacific Missile Range at Kaneohe Marine Base, settling with Jackie and the children in nearby Kailua. Bob was an avid runner and tennis player. He was president of the Kailua Racket Club and the Hawaii Tennis Assoc. He started his own tennis court construction and lighting company. He began running in 1970, often jogging on the streets and beaches of Kailua and Lanikai. He ran many road races, including the New York and Honolulu Marathons. Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jackie; 6 children: Wendy, Peggy, Bart, Lauren, Libby, and Alison; 4 grand- children: Garrett and Lea Eaton, Alison and David Dame-Boyle; a niece, Burnley Dame and a nephew, Frank L. Dame, Jr. A private service will be held.

Edwin Toshiharu Hirai, 70, of Honolulu, Hawaii, passed away April 26, 2013, with his wife and daughter by his bedside. Born April 6, 1943 in Honolulu to parents, the late Masamichi and Matsue Hirai. He is survived by his wife, Gayle T. Hirai, realtor associate with East Oahu Realty, and daughter Chanel A. (Hirai) Kipper, also a realtor associate with East Oahu Realty; and son-in-law, Dr. David Kipper, and his son, Sam Kipper. Surviving brothers: Walter T. (Ellen) Hirai, Francis S. Hirai. Deceased brothers: David, Frank and Stanley Hirai. Surviving sisters: June S. Hirai, Margaret Tom (Kenneth) and Eleanor Hirai-Marquez (Mark). Deceased sisters: Grace Gyotoku (Richard Gyotoku, deceased) and Vivian Hirai. Edwin was employed at Eastman Kodak/Qualex. He faithfully served for 40 years and retired in 2006. He was an avid reader, had an excellent memory, and a natural ability for remembering statistics from his favorite sports: boxing and football. He loved sharing facts and figures on a wealth of topics, and especially, tell stories and jokes to the sports teams he coached. He had a genuine love for people as evidenced by his unpretentious, forthright, and transparent personality. He had a knack for making strangers feel welcomed, accepted and comfortable. This truly was a gift from God. Visitation 4-6 p.m., Monday, June 3, at Diamond Head Mortuary. Celebration service at 6 p.m.

She married Clarence Parker Hoxie in 1949 and resided in Chula Vista, CA. PATRICK VANDERFORD MARKHAM (77),
passed away at home in Fountain Valley, CA, on May 14, 2013, with his family by his side. Patrick was predeceased by his parents Clarence and Mabel Markham, his brother, Clarence Markham Jr. and son, Glenn Markham. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Emily, sons Bradford Markham, Van Markham, Patrick Markham Jr., Richard Markham, sisters Winifred Harris and Valerie Andrews, brother Marvin Markham (Sayoko) and several nieces, nephews and grand- children. On August 1st, 1935, Patrick was the 1st baby born in Damon Tract, Hon, HI. After graduating from St. Louis High School in1953, he joined the US Army and served in TX, KY and Germany. He returned to HI and drove the bus for HRT, then joined a construction firm in Kwajalein, and finally moved to CA to enjoy a successful career in the petroleum industry from which he retired in 1997. Patrick was a simple, caring and honest person, who practiced his faith in deeds rather than words. He was always available to extend a helping hand to anyone in need and was referred to by some in the neighborhood as “St Patrick”. He never turned anyone away. One individual commented, “Patrick is the only true Christian I’ve ever known”. He gave so much. Patrick, we were so lucky to have you. You will be missed by all the lives you’ve touched. Visitation and services will be held on June 10th, 8:30am at Hawaiian Memorial Park. Burial to follow at 10am, Hawaii State Veteran’s Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Alexander “Rogie” Parages, 74 of Ewa Beach, a retired Pearl Harbor Foreman (Shop 64) passed away peacefully with his Ohana by his side at Kuakini Medical Center on May 3, 2013. Known to many as “Rogie”, “Bobby”, “Bongo”, and will be truly missed. He was a man of few words; his smile was his biggest asset as he was respected and loved by all. His love for baseball in high school, Pearl Harbor Shipyard League and the Bar Leagues were proudly displayed by his many trophies as a 2nd baseman. After a romantic courtship with his loving wife, “May” they were blessed with 51 years. In his latter years, he became his granddaughters’ biggest fan and supporter as they lived up his dream as ball players. He will be remembered as raising ” Love Birds” and growing “Vegetables and Fruits”. He would spend hours on the computer researching everything about love birds and gardening from A to Z. He loved listening to Hawaiian music, singing and dancing and was a natural at making everyone laugh. He was a perfect example of someone “living it up, and enjoying life.” Survived by Wife, May; Daughter, Danette Kualapai (Kevin); Son, David Parages (Alli); Sisters, Genevieve Delos Santos, Lucia Benoza; Brother, Ronald Steven Parages (Estelle); Granddaughters; Kalena Kualapai, Kelia Wright, Kilikina Dickey, Kapua Kualapai and 11 Great Grandchildren and many aunties, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
