LINDEN HOWSON NICHOLS (74) Passed away at home in Kailua, HI on May 21, 2013, with her family by her side. Lin was predeceased by her parents, Retired Captain (Navy and United Airlines) George O. Howson and Yvonne “Billie” Howson of Piedmont, CA. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Retired Major (USMC) Alan (Al & Nick) Gaither Nichols, Jr.; daughters Mary Nichols Antaya, Melanie Jean and Margaret Rose Nichols; brother, George Owen Howson; and 4 adoring grandchildren: Nicole Kathryn and Joseph “Joey” Alan Antaya, Margaret “Maggie” Linden Nichols-Reames and Alan Joseph Reames. She was born on May 6, 1939 in San Diego, CA, grew up in the San Francisco Bay area and graduated from Piedmont High School in 1953. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of California Berkeley in 1961. She moved to Pensacola, FL to live with her great aunts in the Sublette family home, and worked for the Pensacola News Journal. She married Marine Capt. Alan G. Nichols, Jr. on December 28,1963 in Pensacola. The family lived in base housing, NAAS Whiting Field, FL, MCAS El Toro, CA, and Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii. They raised their three daughters in Kailua and Lin was an enthusiastic volunteer for the following: Kailua Library, Brownie leader, school room mother, St. John Vianney School PTA secretary, Community Association newspaper editor for 4 years, Maunawili Community Association Neighborhood Watch Captain and President for 2 terms, Girl Scout leader, Secretary of the Kailua High School (KHS) Community Council, Secretary of the KHS Advisory Council, Secretary of the KHS PTSA, a member of the KHS “Effective Communications Taskforce”, parent representative for the University of Hawaii’s “Project Rose” – to improve school climate in public schools. She founded the jazz dance club at KHS, and was the head and lead volunteer trainer in the Emergency Department at Castle Medical Center. She was also a dance and exercise instructor at the Sally Howarth School of Dance, Natural Woman Health Spa, and Woman’s World of Health & Fitness. She was a voracious reader and gifted writer of many short stories and poetry. She adopted many pets as she was a devoted lover of all animals. She will be greatly missed by everyone, two- and four-legged alike, who was touched by her life. Memorial Service: 10:30 am, Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Unity Church of Hawaii, 3608 Diamond Head Circle (at Monsarrat Avenue) Honolulu, 96815.
