CHARLOTTE MOULTON YATES

Posted On June 26th, 2013 -

CHARLOTTE MOULTON YATES Surrounded by her family, Charlotte Moulton Yates died peacefully on June 18, 2013. She was 89 years old and resided at 15 Craigside in Nuuanu. Born and raised in Honolulu, Mrs. Yates was a member of the Punahou School class of 1942. According to The Oahuan for that year, “Charlotte’s dark brown eyes, wild blond hair, and wilder ideas put her on every ‘fun-wagon’ in town. Her general friendliness, mischievous grin and nerve-wracking gum-chewing help to make her the despair of her teachers… If she’s not out’ in the sun, she’s sure to be found shopping.” A lively personality who was well-liked by people of all backgrounds, Mrs. Yates and her late husband Mark Reid Yates were members of the Pacific Club, the Oahu Country Club and the Outrigger Canoe Club, When not in Hawaii, they traveled extensively throughout the world, continuing her passion for shopping. A member of Colonial Dames and Daughters of Hawaii, Mrs. Yates took pride in her family’s heritage that dates back to colonial times in New England as well as in Hawaii with the arrival in the 1830s of the Cornwell and Friel families to engage in ranching and other enterprises. For many years before and during World War II, her father James L. Friel was Harbor Master of Honolulu Harbor and chaired the Trans Pacific Yacht Race. Continuing family traditions of community involvement, Mrs. Yates was a lifelong member of P.E.O. and at various times was actively engaged in Children’s Hospital Thrift Shop, the Honolulu Symphony, The Outdoor Circle, the Rotary Club of Honolulu, The Salvation Anny, to name a few. She financed the acquisition of an organ console at Central Union Church and donated works of art to various museums, including the Honolulu Art Academy. She also fully endowed scholarship funds at the John A. Bums Medical School in memory of her late son Dr. Guy Moulton Yates and at Punahou School. Mrs. Yates is survived by her daughter, Caroline Anne Lehman (married to Dr. Carl W. Lehman), of Honolulu, her son William M. Yates, of Boston, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A memorial service is being held in the Main Sanctuary of Central Union Church at 4 PM on Saturday, June 29, 2013. In lieu of flowers, tax deductible donations may be made to Hawaii Cottey College Scholarship Fund, noting on the memo line of checks “In memory of Charlotte Yates, Chapter F Hawaii” and sent to: P.E.O. International, 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50312.
