RALPH ELWOOD AMBLER 1933-2013 “Hawaii’s First Glass Tinter” Ralph Elwood Ambler of Honolulu, born in Fort Wayne, Indiana passed away on July 12, 2013 in Honolulu. He is survived by wife Wanda L. Ambler; sons Rick D. (Gloria) Ambler, Timothy B. Ambler, Anthony A. Ambler; grand- children Nathaniel P. Ambler (VA), Austin K. Ambler, Noah A. Ambler (CA), April A. Ambler, Samuel D. Ambler; brother Richard L. (Norma) Ambler (FL), sister Linda W. Richie (FL); and many nieces & nephews. He spent 3 years in the Navy and several years in construction before moving to Hawaii in 1961. He founded AMCO Glass Tinting Company the same year (Hawaii’s first glass tinting company) and has been actively serving the people of Hawaii since then. He has been honored with 2 proclamations by both the Mayor and the Governor. Memorial service will be held at 4:00pm Saturday July 27 at The Jesus Church, 465 Kawailoa Road, Kailua (across from the Kailua Beach Park). No flowers.

SAMUEL L. KEALA JR, Of Honolulu, Hawaii, passed away at the Hi’olani Care Center-Kahala Nui, Oahu on June 28, 2013 at the age of 85 following a lengthy illness. He was born on June 16, 1928 in Honolulu, Oahu. He graduated from St. Louis College in 1946 and graduated from University of Portland in civil engineering. As Engineer for Lihue Plantation Company (Amfac) on Kauai from 1956 to 1973, Sam lead the transition from rail to trucking and supervised construction of 100 miles of private plantation road as well as the Lihue Shopping Center and Office Building. Sam became the Project Engineer in 1973 for The James Campbell Estate developing the City of Kapolei, Waikele and University of Hawaii West Oahu. Having a passion for playing Hawaiian music, Sam is survived by former wife, Jalna; daughter, Kathryn (Ford) Keala; sons, Lynden (Lani) Keala, Graydon ‘Buddy'(Kathleen) Keala, Kauai, Malcolm ‘Kaina’ (Junine) Keala, Perth, Australia. Sam had 7 granddaughters and one grandson. He has one living brother, the former Chief of Police, Honolulu County, Francis Keala. JANET RUTH KANETA 80, of Kapolei a Hawaiian Studies teacher with the Kupuna Program entered into eternal peace on July 8, 2013. She will be lovingly remembered by her ‘ohana, friends, and students as Mama, Jan, Mrs. K and Kupuna Kaneta. Janet was born on June 21, 1933 and grew up in Kapahulu on O’ahu. She attended St. Francis Convent School in Manoa and graduated in 1951. She then went on to pursue a teaching degree from St. Mary’s College in Xavier, Kansas, and graduated in 1955. Her love of the Hawaiian Culture made her a “Hawaiian at Heart” as she had been dancing hula for well over 60 years and teaching in the Kupuna Program for over 25 years. Teaching children was her passion and she thrived on the aloha the keiki showered her with throughout the years. Her life truly encompassed the Spirit of Aloha. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Henry (Buff) A.W. Kaneta in 1985 and her loving sister Jean B. Hart in 2001. Janet leaves her everlasting memories to be cherished by her dear sister Charla (Ozzie) Irvine of Pahoa, Big Island; her children Brian (Caroyl) Hirose of Kapolei, O’ahu, Karen (Carlos) Marquez of Kapolei, O’ahu, and Francine (Renee) Kaneta-Souza of Pahoa, Big Island; and her adoring grandchildren Tiffany, Jayson, Hartley and Alana. SUSAN KIMIE MURAYAMA Age 67 of Kaimuki, HI, passed away at home in her sleep on July 14, 2013. Born April 20, 1946 in Lahaina, Maui to Edwin Takeshi and Shirley Sadako Murayama. Susan graduated from Kaimuki High School, Class of 1964, and received her Bachelor’s and Master’s from the University of Hawaii. She was a dedicated teacher at Kaimuki Middle School and Sylvan Learning Center, and previously at Aiea High School. She also owned and operated The Baby Place store in Manoa Marketplace. A tireless working mother with an upbeat and enthusiastic personality, she sent her two children to private school and college. She is survived by daughter and son Dawn and David Wakukawa; sister, Gayle Iizaki; brothers, Randolph and Curtis; and longtime companion Michael Murashige. Jack Kaawalauole Palk

In memory of JACK KAAWALAUOLE PALK Jack K. Palk was born on November 23, 1924 in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father Robert Palk and mother Rose Palk lived on Jack Lane in Nuuanu where his Mom raised flowers to sell leis at the boat harbor. Jack attended Ma’ema’e Elementary School and graduated from St. Louis High School. After high school, Jack served in the Army for several years and was stationed in Alaska. He attended law school on the GI bill at the University of San Francisco; it was there that he met the love of his life, Vera (“Mack”) Jean Palk. They were married March 2nd, 1951 and moved to Honolulu to begin their new life together. Jack began his career as a staff attorney with Castle and Cooke in 1951, where he eventually became a Vice President in their Land Division (Oceanic Properties). He was appointed by then Gov. John A. Burns and served as chairman of the State Real Estate Commission for eight years, he served as chair of the planning committee for the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, and was past president of the Honolulu Board of Realtors in 1969 as well as subsequent Realtor of the Year. In the early 1970’s Jack was hired as President of Security Title Corporation and stayed with the company until his retirement in early 2003. Jack was an avid golfer and longtime member and past President of Mid Pacific Country Club. Jack was a devoted husband and a kind, loving father and grandfather. Jack suffered from the slow debilitating effects of Alzheimer’s disease for many years and passed away on May 24, 2013 at home. He was preceded in death by his wife Mack (Feb. 5, 2009). Jack is survived by his brothers Francis Lum and Jack K. Park and sister Mayrose Corbin. He is survived by his children David P. Palk (Julie) and Nancy P. Miller (Joseph) both of Kailua, Hawaii, and Andrew K. Palk (Marcia) of Bellevue, WA., six beautiful grandchildren: Cameron, Kyle, Katelin, Allegra, Lauren and Tanner as well as many nieces and nephews. Private Services were recently held by the family. The family would like to thank Jack’s long time caregivers, doctors and Islands Hospice staff for their service, support and compassion. She felt blessed with all the friends and families that touched her life along the way. She will greatly be missed and will be remembered for her generosity and loving and caring ways. MITSUE YOKOTA July 10, 2013 Mitsue Yokota, 95, of Honolulu, a homemaker, died in Straub Clinic & Hospital. She was born in Manoa, Oahu on October 26, 1917. Predeceased by her parents, Tsunegoro Morimoto and Shigeyo Kimura-Tanaka, and husband, Warren T. Yokota. She is survived by daughters, Wendy H. Nakanishi and Laura S. (John) Moriyama; sons, Alan T. and Gene K. (Jo-Ann); seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Private services were held.

RICHARD SHUNICHI YOSHIDA

RICHARD SHUNICHI YOSHIDA Age 81, of Honolulu, passed away on July 7, 2013. A veteran of the Korean War, he was born in Pahoa, Hawaii and retired from the U.S. Government Department of Agriculture as a county agent at the University of Hawaii. He was a former employee of the Hawaii Sugar Planters Association (HSPA). Richard is survived by his wife, Jane “Emi”; daughters, Gayle (Clyde) Nishimoto and Janelle (fiance Rick Akutagawa) Yoshida; brother, Sheridan (Laura) Yoshida and sister, Elsie Matsuo. Visitation from 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 26, 2013, at Hosoi Garden Mortuary; service at 6:00 p.m. No flowers. Casual attire.
