Doreen Sheila (Brown) Freeman

DOREEN SHEILA (BROWN) FREEMAN Was born on February 28, 1923, in Liverpool, England. She subsequently lived in Ohio, USA, until 1933 when she and her parents and her brother, Freddie, returned to England. Doreen attended a convent in London, followed by boarding schools in Cheshire and Sussex. After a short stint as a flight attendant with an emerging new airline, at the age of 18, Doreen became a journalist and reporter for the London paper, “The Daily Sketch.” During World War II, she served in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) where she served for three years. In late 1947, Doreen met Houghton “Buck” Freeman and they were married shortly thereafter on April 21, 1948, at the Savoy Chapel in London. They left the next day for Shanghai, China, where their first child, Linda, was born in September, 1949. Evacuated two weeks later, the family moved to Japan which they called their home for 21 years. It was during that time that their son, Graeme, was born in 1955. Doreen and Buck moved to New York City where they lived from 1970 to 1990, and after an additional two years in Japan, they retired to Stowe, Vermont, where they established the Freeman Foundation in 1993. The Honolulu, Hawaii, office opened in 2000. Doreen served as a trustee and was actively involved with the Foundation until her death on July 12th. Doreen leaves behind her daughter, Linda, and son-in-law Don Post, grandchildren Tyler and wife Stacie, Alexi, and Graham, all of Stowe, Vermont; her son, Graeme, and wife Nancy Freeman, grandsons Alec and Colin of Honolulu, Hawaii; and two stepgrandsons, David and Scott DeCristo. She also leaves her brother, Frederick Brown, and wife, Sandra, godson/nephew, Toby Brown, stepnephew Sebastian Brown, of England and nephew, Kelvin Carlyle, of Bali. After 62 years of marriage, her husband, Buck, predeceased her in 2010. A private family service will be held in Vermont. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be made to either the American Red Cross, Hawaii State Chapter, 4155 Diamond Head Rd., Honolulu, Hawaii 96816; or Meals on Wheels of Lamoille County, Vermont, 24 Upper Main St., Morrisville, Vermont 05661.

Albert Chikanobu Kobayashi

ALBERT CHIKANOBU KOBAYASHI June 25, 1920 – July 10, 2013 Albert Chikanobu Kobayashi, 93, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2013 in Honolulu. He was born and raised in Honolulu and graduated from McKinley High School in 1937. Albert was the Founder of Albert C. Kobayashi, Inc., General Contractors which he started in 1949 and was incorporated in 1963. Albert played an active role in the building industry in Hawaii. He served in several leadership positions with the Home Builders Association of Hawaii, The Building Industry Association of Hawaii where he served as President in 1973, General Contractors Association, Oahu Contractors Association, The Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce, The Rotary Club of Ala Moana and the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii. His love of family and community could always be found in their family gatherings, karaoke songs and Izumo Taishakyo Mission of Hawaii leadership activities he actively supported with his wife, Violet for over 50 years. He taught a weekly Wednesday evening karaoke class, offered computer classes and guided the fundraising and building of the cultural hall construction project. In 1999 Albert was honored by the Japanese Cultural Center with a Celebration of Lifetime Achievement and in 2008, he was inducted into the Hawaii Building Industry Hall of Fame. He is preceded in death by his wife Violet C. Kobayashi and his grandson Brandon Kobayashi. Albert is survived by his sons Bert (Susan), James (Jeanne), and Ronald (Sandra) Kobayashi; 5 grandchildren BJ (Nicole) Kobayashi, Patrick (Kris) Kobayashi, Alana (Matt) Pakkala, Michelle (Brian) Hashimoto, Lisa Ann (Gilbert) Shin; 6 great grandchildren; sister in law Mildred Sakai, nieces and nephew. The Kobayashi family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the Anzai Ohana for their loving care given to Albert. To Carol & Jason, Christina & Jason Jr. & family, and Jennifer & Billy Guillermo – We are sincerely thankful for all you did for Albert. A private memorial service was held on July 24, 2013.
