Dominador was a retired staff sergeant from the Hawaii Army National Guard 29th Infantry Brigade & Troop E 19th Calvary who also served in world war II & the Federal Civil Service. WILLIAM (BILL) STEPHEN MILLER Of Honolulu, Hawaii passed away on July 5, 2013 at his home in Honolulu. Bill was born October 24, 1949 inHuntington Park, Californiato Hazel and LawrenceMiller. He graduated from Huntington Park High School as Senior Class President and received the B’nai B’rith award for outstanding student. He graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1971, cum laude, and Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco in 1974 where he was a member of the Hastings Law Review. Bill practiced law with the Honolulu law firm Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel for 25 years. He successfully litigated professional malpractice, products liability and insurance bad faith claims, major contract disputes, real estate, title insurance matters, and construction disputes. He was a member of the California and Hawaii Bar Associations and was listed in the “Best Lawyers” Directory, widely regarded as a significant honor, conferred on a lawyer by his or her peers. He also served on the Board of Directors for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Although Bill had a full career, he always found time for his other loves — music, sports, and books. He was a proud member of the Beatles fan club. He hiked the John Muir Trail, paddled a kayak down the Colorado River, and ran several marathons. Bill suffered from hereditary spasticparaplegia, a rare disease whichcausesprogressive weakness in the legs, for which there is no cure. But this did not stop Bill from enjoying his favorite sport, swimming. Even in the late stages of his disorder he would have his caregiver bring him to a pool in Hawaii Kai for a swim. Bill’s collection of books was eclectic and vast, from How to Make Money in the Stock Market toStephen Hawking’sABrief History of Time. Above all, Bill’s one true love in life was his daughter, Julia. Billis survived by his daughter Julia Miller of Los Angeles, California, his nephew John Randolph of Hanover, New Hampshire and his sister Marilyn Randolph of Pasadena, California. A memorial service will be held on August 20, 2013 at The Outrigger Canoe Club at 5:30 PM. SHARON ANN SERENE Died July 18 at Queen’s Medical Center. She owned Sharon Serene Creative, specializing in retail advertising, marketing and public relations. Past clients include Kahala Mall, Hawaii Kai Town Centre, Reyn’s, Martin and MacArthur, and The Slipper House. She was born October 30, 1947 in Kittanning, Pennsylvania and attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh where she earned a degree in commercial art. She moved to Hawaii in 1972. Known as a decisive, brilliant and quick-witted entrepreneur in a field that had been dominated by men, she was a no nonsense competitor in business. She did not suffer fools lightly, but she was also known as a caring employer and a mentor to those starting out in the business. She was honored with many awards during her career, including the 2003 Retail Merchants of Hawaii Governors Award for Excellence, and was a finalist in the 2005 Pacific Business News Women Who Mean Business. She served on the boards of Retail Merchants of Hawaii, Goodwill Industries and the International Council of Shopping Centers. Her sense of drive and determination marked her personal life as well, no more than when she took on a mid-life make-over that attracted widespread publicity for her success with physical conditioningachievements recognized when she was named a 2007 finalist in Hawaii Business Magazine’s Hawaii’s Fittest CEO competition. Her hobbies included personal growth programs, painting and shopping with an insider’s keen eye for retail marketing. Serene is survived by her husband of 35 years, Jim Patterson, brother Don Serene (Nancy), nieces Terri Serene, Connie Shiplett (Ed), Lauren Shiplett, nephews Tom Serene and Matthew Shiplett. Services will be 9:30 a.m. August 10 at the boat ramp area of Kailua Beach Park, and will be followed by scattering of ashes offshore. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Francis Hospice.
