WILFRED “WILLIE” SATORU NAKAKURA
WILFRED "WILLIE" SATORU NAKAKURA Wilfred "Willie" Satoru Nakakura passed peacefully on July 9, 2013 at Kapuna Wai Ola. He was born on July 27, 1935 in Honolulu. Son of the late Lincoln and Thelma Nakakura, Willie grew up in the Kalihi area and attended Saint Louis School. Upon graduation, Willie attended the University of Portland from 1953 to 1955 and returned home to finish his schooling at the University of Hawaii, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Recreation in 1959. Willie was the president of Nakakura Construction Co., LTD from 1965 to 1979. In 1979, Nakakura Construction merged with Japan-based company Tokyu Construction to form Pan-Pacific Construction Inc., where he filled the president's role until 1993. During his life, Willie served on many boards and committees, including the following: Navy League (member), Nuuanu YMCA, Aloha Athletic Club (member), Moanalua Golf Club (president and director), Pacific Palisades Community Association (member), General Contractors Association of Hawaii (president and director), Construction Industry Legislative Organization (chairman and legislative chairman), Hawaii State Contractors Council (member), Association of State Licensing Agencies (national director), Contractor's License Board (member), Easter Seals VIP Telethon/Taste of Honolulu, Contractor's License Board (vice president), POI Coalition - People Oppose Initiative (co-chair), Saint Louis School Education Foundation (board of director) and Sand Island Business Association (member). In addition, Willie served on the Board of Directors for the Hawaii State Sheriff Association for 25 years. Among his many leisure interests, sports topped the list, specifically golf. Willie was a member of Mid-Pacific CC and Moanalua GC. He also played baseball and softball games in which he was known for his nasty change-up. Can't forget Las Vegas! Willie and May frequented "the 9th island" regularly. During the last decade, lots of family fun and memories were created, especially the ones his sons, daughter-in-laws and grandkids took him on. Indeed, Willie lived a good life! Willie is survived by his wife, May Asayo Nakakura; sons Derek (Bo) and wife Terry, Dean and wife Cheryl, and Darin and wife Kimberly; brother Stanley Nakakura, sister-in-law Jean, sister Molly Morita, brother-in-law Mike, sister Eleanor Iwamoto, brother-in-law Robert, five grandchildren: DJ Willie, Jayson, Asia (and husband Ronson Honeychurch), Summer and Drew; one great grandchild, Conner Kelly; his many nieces, nephews, aunties, uncles and comrades; and Coco, Willie and May's beloved dog. Willie Nakakura's family is eternally grateful for all the support and love received from family members, friends and colleagues during this time. The family would also like to acknowledge all the healthcare professionals who touched the lives of Willie and his family during the final days of his life. Services will be held Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Diamond Head Memorial Park. Visitation begins at 10 a.m.; Services follow at 11. Casual attire
