PAUL S. KENNEDY
PAUL S. KENNEDY Rev. Paul S. Kennedy "Papa Paul", age 79, Honolulu Hawaii passed away at home on August 20th, 2013. He was born on 7/28/1934 to Bishop Harry S. Kennedy and Katharine K. Kennedy in Denver, Colorado. He was convinced he was the favorite son amongst his four brothers, Bruce, David, Joel and Mark who all moved to Hawaii in 1944. He was married to his loving wife of 50 years, Rebe H. Kennedy on November, 18th, 1963. Paul attended 'Iolani School and graduated in 1952 and went on to earn a B.A. from Trinity College and a Master of Divinity degree from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. In between, he served for three years as a jet bomber pilot for the Strategic Air Command in Arkansas. From 1963-1966 he was co-director for Project LIFE in Guatemala during which time he was ordained in the Episcopal Church and served as diocesan coordinator as well as welcomed his first and favorite child, Raquel. He moved his small family to Mexico City in 1968 to serve as chaplain and instructor in sociology at the St. Andrew's Seminary in Mexico City during which another favorite child was born, Paul Che. In 1970 the family moved to Tucson, AZ to continue his passion for learning in Urban Anthropology. Here, his final favorite child was born, Ian. Papa Paul's passion for teaching and love of Hawaii brought him back to Oahu in 1970 where he started his career at his alma mater, 'Iolani School. Here he greatly impacted the lives of many during his time as a Teacher, Counselor & Head of Admissions. He retired in 1996 after 26 years of dedicated service. After his retirement, he was heavily involved with the Hawaii Literacy Society as a volunteer teacher and trainer as well as a part time teacher of AP Psychology at 'Iolani School. Papa Paul had a deep love of sports, especially playing tennis, and was an avid supporter of all the 'Iolani Sports teams as well as any team his grandchildren played on. He is survived by his loving wife, Rebe Kennedy, three children, Raquel Leong, Paul Che Kennedy & Ian Kennedy and five grandchildren, Timothy & Daniel Leong and Connor, Julia & Kai Kennedy and walking partner, Scooby. We will miss him dearly, especially his sense of humor. We love you, Papa. The funeral will be a private family service with ashes scattered at sea. A Eucharist Service open to all will be held in Paul's honor on Saturday, August 31, 2013, 9am at St. Alban's Chapel, 'Iolani School. In lieu of flowers the family requests that gifts be made in his honor to 'Iolani School. All gifts will be directed to the Scholarship Fund.
