SATSUKI “SATS” IZUTSU

Posted On October 6th, 2013 -

10-6 562073 Satsuki IzutsuSATSUKI SATS IZUTSU On Sunday, September 1, 2013, Satsuki Izutsu passed away peacefully at the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. She was 91 years young and left 2 sisters: Jane Nakabayashi and Thelma Akau; 2 brothers: Setsuo and Satoru Izutsu; a number of nieces and nephews; grand nieces and nephews; and great grand nieces and nephews, along with countless friends. She was born on March 5, 1922 in Makaweli, Kauai. She lived with her family at Camp Six where her father managed the plantation store. She was a proud graduate of Mid Pacific Institute in Honolulu, and an accomplished alumna at the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a degree in education. She was a teacher with the Territory and State Department of Education and a life-long educator and learner. She was a recipient of two (2) Fullbright Scholarships to Japan to study educational television at NHK and flower arranging at the Ikenobo School in Kyoto. She was a student of the Koto and practiced the arts of ikebana, cha-no-yu, calligraphy, sewing, the Celtic harp, and handmade paper crafts. Sats was a consummate traveler that always sought new journeys and adventures often by herself. She treasured all her friends and acquaintances and was devoted to her family and Christ the Lord. As she did not have her own children, her nieces and nephews were blessed to have Aunty Sats as a second mother. She was a stable presence who kept the family fabric intact. We appreciate all those who have taken Sats into their hearts and lives. In the event of her passing, she wished for a small family service. Yet, we know that she would want all of you to think of her without grieving, for her spirit will live in all of us. With sincere appreciation the family thanks all who have shared special moments with our dear Sats. With love and thanks – the family of Satsuki Izutsu.
