Shinji Soneda

11-30 SHINJI SONODASHINJI SONEDA Shinji Soneda was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on January 15, 1926 to Ayako Nagamori and Kenji Soneda, and was the fourth of six children. He attended Farrington High School. After serving in the Army at the end of World War II, which included time with Military Intelligence Service, he took advantage of the GI Bill to attend the University of Hawaii, Rose Polytech Institute (now Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology) and Harvard University and earned a Masters Degree in Engineering. On June 21, 1953, he married the love of his life, Masuko Shimazu, and they settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, where Shinji worked as a civil engineer. In 1956 Shinji and Masuko moved back to their beloved Hawaii with their two sons, Brian and Alan, who were soon joined in Hawaii by daughters, Cynthia and Janice. Shinji worked for the State of Hawaii as a civil engineer in the Health Department, retiring in 1990 after reaching the level of Division Chief. Shinji passed away on November 13, 2013 at Maunalani Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He is survived by his wife Masuko Soneda (Honolulu); his brother Gerald “Bolo” Soneda (Waipahu); children, Brian Soneda (Burlington, Washington), Alan Soneda (El Cerrito, California), Cynthia Timtim Soneda (Honolulu) and Janice Saiki (San Ramon, California), and eight grandchildren. A private ceremony was held at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl Cemetery).
