Thomas T. S. Leong

Posted On January 4th, 2014 -

1-4 587737 Thomas LeongTHOMAS T. S. LEONG December 20, 1935 – December 30, 2012 Happy New Year Tom! As we fondly remember you, our memories become treasures. Known as “Luppy or Lup” by your close friends for various reasons; many classmates at Roosevelt High School still remember you as a “better than average” athlete in both basketball and track. As a USC Trojan alumnus, you earned both your BA and MA degrees in Anthropology and presented “The Kahuna Institution of Hawaii” as your MA thesis. You always enjoyed sharing your interest in and vast book collection of Hawaiian culture and history with your friends. Your service as a hospital corpsman at the U. S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, California made you realize that you did not want to become a doctor. This led you to your 25-year management career with the Hawaii Sears Roebuck and Co. It was there that you established and maintained close friendships with not only the Hawaii employees, but also with the Chicago executives until you retired. Your sense of humor, and dedication to the USC Trojan football team resulted in a long 30-year friendly rivalry with a Sears friend who was a staunch Univ. of Notre Dame supporter. While a private person in general, being a Toastmaster member you had the ability to be vocal if needed and were comfortable in the presence of all people. You continued your early interest in raising fresh and salt-water fishes and participated in on shore and deep sea fishing with family and friends on Oahu and Molokai. We fondly remember your “big catch” of a 565-pound marlin aboard the Yee’s boat. In retirement, you became a self-taught carpenter and handyman building fences, cabinets, bookcases, tables, and a small fishpond with gold fishes and water lilies. You even risked injury to repair the roof of a green house. Your handiwork remains today, bringing back fond memories of your craftsmanship. We remember your enjoyment in reading “Hawaiiana”, “How -to-do” books, and particularly action packed fantasy science fiction books. You also enjoyed watching DVD’s and videotapes on these topics and also “Kung-Fu” movies. Your love of cooking various ethnic foods was enjoyed by all. You were loving, considerate, thoughtful, appreciative, supportive, patient, conservative, witty and loyal, and the many memories you left us will leave a lasting impact and joy in all of us. ALOHA NUl LOA
