SHIZUKO IKEDA Of Honolulu, HI passed away December 25, 2013 peacefully at home. Born April 22, 1922 in Honolulu, she is preceded by her husband of 48 years, Yutaka, and survived by her children Howard Y. Ikeda (Gayle), Sylvia Y. Iwanaka (Bert), and Russel M. Ikeda (Linda); her sisters Ruth Takishima and Gladys Young, and her brother Etsuji Kaetsu; six grandchildren Gavin, Kelly, Lance, Ryan, Kim, and Tyler, and six great-grandchildren, Faith, Zoe, Evan, Dylan, Drew, and Tanner. Known for her warm presence and friendly smiles, Shizuko lived a life of service for her children and family. She brought forth the very best in those fortunate enough to know her. 1-8-14 HARMAN LUMHARMAN LUM Age 84 of Kahului, Maui formerly of Honolulu, Hawaii died on December 1, 2013 at his residence. He was born June 28, 1929 in Hamilton, Ohio. Harman was for many years one of the most familiar faces in downtown Honolulu, where he sold newspapers at the corner of Bishop and Hotel Streets. As described by Star Bulletin columnist, Dave Donnelly, in his Hawaii column on June 24, 1999, “Harman started selling papers in 1953, and used to sell on each day to bankers, lawyers, and other downtown business tycoons; even Governor John A. Burns, who’d pick up one on his way to breakfast at the Alexander Young Hotel’s Hob Nob Coffee Shop”. Ben Wood, Star Advertiser Columnist, described Harman as one of the best, if not the best, when it comes to selling newspapers. On Harman’s 60th birthday on June 28, 1989, then Governor John Waihee, and Mayor Frank Fasi proclaimed it “Harman Lum Day”. He never missed a day of work six days a week and retired at the age of 70. He was a volunteer at the Moiliili Senior Center and contributed money to the U.S. Special Olympics. He is survived by sister Mayette Zane; brother: Doman Lum, numerous nieces and nephews and Grand nieces and nephews. Visitation Saturday, January 11, 2014 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Diamond Head Mortuary Chapel. A Funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the chapel. Private Inurnment. Aloha Attire.

SEICHI TABATA

1-8 SEICHI TABATASEICHI TABATA Seichi Tabata, age 87, of Honolulu, Hawaii passed away November 18, 2013 while visiting Japan. He was born on July 31, 1926 in Lahaina, Maui. Seichi was a devoted husband, beloved brother, caring father, and proud grandfather and great-grandfather. He served in the U.S. Army and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Sergeant. While serving in the Army in Japan, he met his wife Emiko in Osaka. He was a dedicated and devoted student and instructor of Shinshin Toitsu Aikido, who taught for many decades in Hawaii, the Mainland, and in Canada. He taught thousands of students from all over the world and dedicated his life to teaching others. This past summer he received his 9th degree black belt while celebrating 60 years of teaching in Hawaii. He was the retired Chief Instructor of the Hawaii Ki Society, founded the Honolulu Ki Society and was the Chief Instructor of Seishinkan Dojo. Seichi also had a successful business career, ending as an agent for Occidental Underwriters of Hawaii, where he earned Million Dollar Round Table recognition and faithfully served his clients before retiring at age 80. He is survived by his son Calvin (Karen) Tabata, daughters, Lynn Yokomizo, Elsie Tabata, and Betty (Nicholas) Dykstra, brothers Katsutoshi Tabata, Shogo Tabata, Takashi Tabata, sisters, Nobuko Abe, Shirley Ponomareff, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Honpa Hongwangji Hawaii Betsuin, 1727 Pali Highway, Honolulu, on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation begins 10 a.m.
