MILDRED CHRISTOPHERSON 95, of Fargo, ND, died Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Bethany on University, Fargo. Mildred Olive Christopherson, daughter of Oscar and Minnie (Stoa) Christopherson, was born May 24, 1918 at Carpio, ND. Her lifetime work was in Christian Ministries. She served as a Parish Worker and Youth Minister in churches in Minot, ND; Watertown, SD; Havre, MT; Chicago, IL; and Honolulu, HI. Through the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Waikiki, she helped develop a television ministry and was known on the Island as “The Story Lady”. She helped organize The Waikiki Beach Chaplaincy, an evangelistic ministry to residents and tourists. In cooperation with The Lutheran Bible Institute of Seattle she organized The Bible Institute of Hawaii, a teaching ministry reaching all denominations in the Islands. 1-24-MIRIAM-OHTA-KOBAYASHIMIRIAM OHTA KOBAYASHI (Age 87) On Saturday January 11, 2014 of Springfield, Virginia. Devoted mother of Larry (Kimberly,) Robert and Neal (Karen). Loving grandmother of Rebecca, Jennifer (Zachary), Nathan, Anya, Gregory and Aaron. Mrs. Kobayashi was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and received her BA in English from the Pacific Union College in California. As the wife of a US Foreign Service diplomat, she raised her family in Pakistan, Colombia, Okinawa, and Tokyo, Japan. In her later years, she worked for over 16 years as an executive secretary for the National Science Foundation in Washington D.C., but her true love was teaching English which she did in Hawaii, Okinawa and as an “English as a Second Language” volunteer up until her death. She loved gardening and cultivating roses in particular, and always had impeccable taste in dress. She was always an unobtrusive but unmistakable presence in her sons’ and grandkids’ lives and will be dearly missed. A memorial service will be held on 8 February in Springfield, Virginia, and a private family dinner celebrating her life will be held in March in Honolulu, Hawaii, prior to her being interred at Nuuanu Memorial Park.

SHERWOOD DAVIS MAYNARD Dr. Sherwood Davis Maynard, passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2013, after a long struggle with diabetes and related health issues. As Director of the Marine Option Program (MOP) from 1980 2007, he mentored thousands of students in ocean-related studies and was responsible for the development of the University of Hawaii’s unique underwater field schools (QUEST and MAST), Blue-Water Marine Lab, the Graduate Ocean Policy Certificate, and the Maritime Archaeology Symposium. At the time of his retirement in 2008, he led the Biology and Marine Biology programs at the University of Hawaii-Manoa College of Natural Sciences. Sherwood was proud of the achievements of all his students and will be greatly missed by his students and colleagues. Sherwood was born in Rochester, Minnesota on October 4, 1946, the son of Dr. Mason and Margaret Maynard. He grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan and graduated from Ottawa Hills High School. He received degrees from the University of Washington and the University of Hawaii, completing a PhD in Oceanography at University of Hawaii. His strong work ethic ran through their family from their father who was a physician and their mom a nurse. His quiet determination began early leading to achievements as an Eagle Scout, high school SCUBA certification, and, as the oldest of four children, set high standards for his siblings who came after him in school. Sherwood is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; sisters, Susan Bowen and Sharon Crawford; and brother, Michael Maynard. A memorial service will be heldSaturday, January 25, 2014 with visitation at 10:00a.m.(services at11:00a.m.) at Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary in Kaneohe.
