2-2 597013-01-01 Robert Roberts photo #1ROBERT RUSSELL ROBERTS Robert Russell Roberts, 82, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the VA San Diego Medical Center on Friday, January 10, 2014. He was born March 4, 1931 to Mede Ira and Lillian Vogel Roberts in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. As a 17 year old, he joined the US Army and rose to the rank of Sergeant Major before retiring after 20 years of service. He was a proud member of the Signal Corps and a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After completion of his military service, Robert earned his PhD in Microbiology from Brigham Young University in Provo, UT. He thoroughly enjoyed his student years and remained a loyal BYU Cougar for the rest of his life. Upon graduation, he began his career as a research scientist with the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association in Aiea, Hawaii where he often mentored young people interested in careers in science. He married Midori Komatsu in Tokyo, Japan in 1953 and together they raised three children, Linda Bray of Oceanside, CA, Lillian Kearney of Houston, TX and Ira Roberts of Bakersfield, CA. He was also blessed with 2 grandchildren, Lauren Bray of Palo Alto, CA and Amy Bray currently serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in Brasov, Romania. Robert was a valiant and faithful member of the LDS Church and held many positions of service over the past 50 years. As a tribute to the 35 years Robert spent in his beloved Hawaii, Hawaiian attire was worn at his gravesite service on January 17th. Burial with full military honors followed at Riverside National Cemetery in California. The family would like to thank his excellent caregivers, both at Rancho Vista senior living facility in Vista, CA where he spent the last year-and-a-half of his life, and at the VA San Diego Medical Center.
