He was an aircraft mechanic at Hawaiian Airlines for 45 years and a graduate of Farrington High School Class of ’53. He was a wonderful husband, father, granddad, brother and uncle. His passion was “golfing.” He loved to run, travel, attend Saint Louis Crusader Football games and spend quality time with family. He was a generous, loving and compassionate man who did so much for others to see them succeed. Survived by son, Jason (Jan-Marie), two daughters Rona (John) Barsano and Melisa (Michael) Burton of California. 2-23-WILHELMINA-KANAEWILHELMINA “MINA” SOPHIA GOMES KANAE 80, of Waimanalo, passed away on January 23, 2014. She was born on August 19, 1933, in Honolulu, to Ernest and Maria Gomes. She is survived by children Wilhelmina “Willie” M. Kanae; Frances “Fran” (Bill) Becker of Kapaa, Kauai; Ernest Kanae of Hilo, Hawaii; and Steven (Julie Beth) Kanae; 10 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. Surviving sisters are Gertrude Mahoney, Ruth (Samuel) Yap of Puko’o, Moloka’i, Ernestine (Edward Sr) Kama, Juanita Shoehigh, and Claire Ann Cabrido, and brother William (Bonnie) Gomes of San Marcos, California. A proud graduate of the class of 1951 from William McKinley High School, Mina enjoyed a good party and went to all her reunion gatherings. She loved music and hula dancing. While still in high school, her hula experience started under the auspices of Kent Ghirard at the Niumalu Hotel, which is now the Hilton Hawaiian Village, and took her to Japan and the Philippines. After high school, she was a contestant in the 1951 Miss Hawaii Pageant. In June of 1952, she joined the Royal Hawaiian Girls Glee Club dancing with the Kodak Hula Show through 1997. In her early years with Kodak, she opened “Mina Kanae’s Hula Studio” teaching hula to military families and their children. Mina was also a life time member of Hale O Na Alii O Hawaii. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, February 28, 2014 at Borthwick Mortuary, Vineyard/Maunakea Chapel. Visitation at 5:30pm and service at 6:00 p.m. Aloha attire.
