Karl William Robert Johnson, 89, of Hilo, an inorganic chemist for Los Alamos National Laboratory and a Navy veteran who served in World War II, died at home. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa. He is survived by daughters Kay Newnam and Sally Bustamante, brother Vaughn, sister Lois Reeves, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
