Hines former Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at U of H at Manoa passed away on Thursday April 10, 2014 at home under the care of Island Hospice. He retired from the University in 1994 as Professor Emeritus in Music. Professor Hines was the son of the late Harry R. Hines and Gertrude Paine Hines of Kingston, NY. He developed a love of music in High School that continued throughout his life. He learned to play the sax, piano and clarinet and organized several bands in school and in the navy during World War II. Atter being dIscharged from the Navy Sea Bees in 1946, he auditioned and was accepted to The Julliard School. Following graduation in 1952, he accepted a position as Director of Choral Activities for the General Motors Corporation in Detroit. At the same time, he went back to school at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and attained a Masters in Music. Professor Hines had a long and illustrious career as an educator, composer, choral arranger and author: Between 1957 and 1972, he was employed as Professor of Music and Choral Activities at Southern Illinois University, Wichita State University and the University of Miami. In the Fall of 1972, he began a long and satisfying career at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His career at the University spanned 22 years. He held positions as Professor of Music, Chairman of the Music Department; Acting Dean, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences; Acting Dean and Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities. By his own admission Professor Hines was first and foremost an educator. He loved being in the classroom and teaching. He recognized that to succeed in the field of choral music, it was absolutely necessary to be there when students rehearsed and performed. He is remembered fondly by many of his former students. His contributions to the world of music have been remarkable and will continue through his published works. He published six books as well as articles for both "The Choral Journal" and the Symposium. He also published two major arrangements for chorus and orchestra plus over 250 shorter works for choral ensembles. Pretty amazing. Professor Hines maintained memberships in numerous Professional Associations. He also served on several Board of Directors that funded the arts. The most recent being the "Arthur and Mae Orvis Foundation, Inc." As an Orvis Board member, his responsibility was to recommend organizations in the State of Hawaii for funding.
