VICTORIA MARIA LIPSKA Victoria Maria Lipska, a longtime resident of Honolulu, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2014 at Queens Hospital. Known by her friends as Vicky, she was born Jadwiga Maria Therese Lipska in Krakow, Poland. Her father, Stanislaus Lipski, was a noted composer of Polish folk music and a professor of music at Krakow University. At an early age, Vicky showed promise as a pianist, however her plans for studying music were interrupted by her father's untimely death and the upheavals of World War II. Vicky and her mother Ewa Lipska, along with hundreds of thousands of Polish citizens, were deported to Russia by the Russian government in 1939. In 1942, they and other Poles who managed to survive the harsh Russian exile were transported to Iran, and from there to the Polish School for Young Volunteers in Nazareth, in what was then Palestine. Following her high school graduation, she briefly studied music at the American University in Beirut, then went on to study art at the Borough Polytechnic Institute in London. While in London, Vicky won first place in a National Poster Competition held by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Completing her art studies in London, she joined her mother in Wellington, New Zealand. Eventually Vicky took a position with the prestigious Gamlin Advertising Agency in Sydney, Australia. When the Gamlin Agency opened an office in Hawaii, she moved to Honolulu and worked for several years as their Senior Art Director before moving on to do freelance artwork. Vicky enjoyed socializing with friends, good movies, classical music and traveling to visit friends on the mainland in Tucson, Arizona; Seattle, Washington; and Chicago, Illinois; as well as France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. Vicky is survived by her close friends, Lyn Stobie and Martha Samson of Honolulu, her second cousin, Katrina Gmach and husband Alistair Gilmour, of Sydney, Australia and many other friends in Honolulu and around the world.
