JOSEPH MALTBY IV 82, our gentle, loving, and beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, died June 29, 2014 at Kobacker House hospice in Columbus, OH. He was born September 22, 1931 in Long Beach, CA and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High in 1948. He received his BA (1952) and his MA (1957) in English from Stanford University and his PhD (1963) in English from the University of Wisconsin. Joe spent the next 33 years at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, retiring as Professor Emeritus of English in 1995. During those years he served as Assistant Dean of Arts and Sciences (1964-67), Assistant Chair and Chair of the Department of English (1968-73), and member of many university committees and numerous cultural and arts councils and boards in Honolulu. He was an exceptional and popular teacher who developed and taught a variety of courses with a special fondness for Shakespeare. Many in Hawaii will remember his perceptive drama reviews for the Honolulu Advertiser (1966-70) as well as his thoughtful and witty classical music and opera reviews for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin (1977-88). His wonderful sense of humor and his distinctive, infectious laugh proved often how much he loved life. And he was passionate about movies old and new, classical music, theater, politics, world travel, good food and drink, and his 10,000-book library, which he has been re-reading since his retirement in Columbus in 1997. He is preceded in death in Long Beach by his father Judge Joseph Maltby III, mother Helen Cook Maltby, and brother Dr. James Maltby. Joe is survived by his companion and wife of 40 years, Nancy Ellen Maltby; daughters Melinda Susan Maltby (James) Purdy and Rebecca Lynn Maltby; grandson Michael Joseph Graue; mother-in-law Betty Brown; first wife Joyce Maltby Boroughs; nephews and niece; and many friends in Columbus, Hawaii, and California.
