ATTORNEY RUFINO SAN GABRIEL CATANGUI, JR.
ATTORNEY RUFINO SAN GABRIEL CATANGUI, JR. Attorney Rufino Catangui passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving wife and family on Sunday, July 27, 2014. He was born on January 12, 1932, in Iriga, Camarines Sur, Bicol Province, Philippines. He finished his primary and intermediate schooling at Santo Domingo Elementary and intermediate at Iriga Central. He was an academic scholar at Ateneo de Naga High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts and his Law Degree (LLB) from Ateneo de Manila College of Law, and a Master's of Law Degree (LLM) in Taxation from the Manuel L. Quezon University in Manila. He was an attorney with the Joint Legislative Tax Commission and a Tax Adviser to the President of the Republic of the Philippines. He also taught tax law at the University of the East, and was a trial, immigration and bankruptcy lawyer. In addition, he was a distinguished member of the Philippine Integrated Bar and New York State Bar, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). Finally, he was also an insurance executive with Equitable Life for several decades, and received many underwriting and sales awards. He is survived by his family, his wife, Nenita Gruspe Catangui; his adoring children, Jean Catangui Roland (husband Derek), Raul Catangui, Esq., and Josephine Catangui Adams (husband Scott); and grandchildren: Erin, Courtney, Indigo, and Tristan; sister and brother, Dr. Josefin Catangui, MD and Dr. Pilar Catangui Moncada, PhD; and nieces and nephews in the United States and the Philippines. A memorial wake to celebrate his life and accomplishments will be held at Mililani Mortuary in Downtown Honolulu, 20 South Kukui Street on Wednesday, August 13th from 5:30 to 9:00 pm. His funeral service will be held on August 14th at St. Joseph's Church located at 94-675 Farrington Highway in Waipahu at 8:30 am, which will be followed by burial at Valley of the Temples located at 47-200 Kahekili Highway in Kaneohe, Hawaii. In summary, he was a compassionate and humble man, and had many accomplishments in law, insurance, investments and real estate. He loved sports, news, humor, international travel, chess, Hawaii and Bicol, and most importantly, the company of great friends and family. He will be greatly missed by the many friends and family that he touched and helped. And now, we say aloha and farewell to a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a great human being as he makes his journey to meet our heavenly Father.
