FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Barry K. Ontai
MSGT. BARRY KALEOALOHA ONTAI, U.S. ARMY (RET) Barry passed away on September 22 in Honolulu at the age of 87. He was born in Lahaina, Maui on September 2, 1927 to Albert and Eliza Ontai. Barry was a graduate of Kamehameha Schools Class of 1945, where he earned All-Star awards in Football, Track, and Basketball. He married Elfriede Rhein and celebrated 60 years of matrimony on September 11, 2014. Master Sergeant Ontai had an illustrious Army career that began in 1945. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1967 after 22 years of service having received the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and numerous athletic honors while serving in the 18th INF Division. After his military career, Barry worked tirelessly as an Administrative Assistant to the Judge Advocate, Pearl Harbor for 20 years. He was dedicated to his wife, Church, family, and the Dallas Cowboys. Barry is survived by his loving wife Elfriede, sister Marguerite Blaum, sister-in-law Pauline Ontai, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Aiea at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, Oct.14; Services at 6:00 pm. Burial will be at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl, with military honors on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 11:30 am.
