LARRY E SMITH
LARRY E. SMITH December 13, 2014 Larry E. Smith, 73, passed away on Dec. 13 in New Delhi, India. A longtime Hawai'i resident, he was born in Osceola, Arkansas on June 19, 1941. He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer and joined the East-West Center in 1970, retiring in 1999 as Director and Dean of the Education Program. He was instrumental in founding the International Association for World Englishes and co-founded and served as adviser to the Journal of World Englishes. He was president of Christopher, Smith and Associates; an instructor with the Japan-America Institute of Management Science; a bible teacher and church leader. He is survived by wife Sharyn; son, Sean (Tracey); daughter, Eryn (Dustin) Mask; sisters, Marralee Neal , Gwen (Billy Joe) Simmons, Shirley Craig and Linda (B.J.) Brumley; grandchildren Trenton and Landon Mask; numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial service to be held at First Presbyterian of Honolulu, in Kaneohe on January 4,2015 visitation at 2:00p.m. Service at 3:00p.m. Reception to follow. Aloha attire, no flowers please.
