He is survived by his wife Signe; sons Denton and Richard; daughters Karen, Wendy and Jonelle; grandchildren, Nina, April, Kayla, Karys, Daniel, Kai and Jade; sons-in-law, Andy, Keith and Matt; and nephews Dudley and Adam Godfrey. He led his high school golf team to the Suburban Links Crown and won medalist honors in a meet against 60 other players. He earned a BBA in finance and marketing from the University of Wisconsin, and then served as chief of the accounting division for the U.S. Army Finance Corps in Europe. He returned to earn an MBA from Stanford University in 1958. Roger’s impressive career in the food industry began at the young age of 15 where he worked in his family’s grocery stores, The Godfrey Company. After his graduate work, Roger had acquired supermarkets from the Bay Area to San Jose to build a 10-store chain. He sold the chain of stores to work for Certified and became the EVP and GM in Hawaii. Then he worked as the Director of Distribution for Foodland Supermarkets. From there, Roger moved on to Fleming Cos. where he was Division President. After Fleming, he helped to negotiate the successful sale of Times Supermarket and served as President before retiring. In retirement, Roger remained active in the community, serving on the boards of the Hawaii Foodbank, the Hawaii Public Housing Authority and on the Executive Committee for the Hawaii Sheraton Bowl. He also enjoyed golf, gardening, and travelling with his wife, Signe. Roger was inducted into the Hawaii Food Industry Association’s Hall of Fame in 2012 a prestigious recognition of contributions made to the food industry in Hawaii. Asked about his success, Roger was once quoted as saying it was due to “a great meat guy for a partner, a great produce guy and a go-for-broke attitude by all.” However, an industry colleague said it also was because of his honesty and integrity, and described Roger as “someone who cares about you in both business and personal matters.” He left a lasting impact on those who knew him and a legacy for us all to remember.
