Donald G. Murchie
$nameDONALD G. MURCHIE On April 30, 2015, Donald Gordon Murchie, 92 years old, passed way. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 64 years, Helen (nee Might); his four daughters: Margaret, Barbara, Nancy (Donald), and Donna; his four granddaughters: Emily, Leiala (Justin), Emma and Elizabeth; his great-grandson, Koa Scot and other extended family members. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Scot. Don was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. He joined the RCAF in 1941 and flew Spitfires in 85 combat missions during WWII (412 SQN). After the war, in 1946, he returned home to Calgary and attended Olds Agricultural College and the University of Alberta (8. Sc.) where he met Helen. They married in 1951 and Don rejoined the RCAF with a permanent commission. They raised their four daughters in Europe and Canada. He flew all kinds of aircraft includ ing Harvards, T-33's, F104's, C45's, as well as F86 Sabres (444 SQN). With much pride, Don conducted the test acceptance flights on the Golden Centennaires Aerobatic Team's Tudor Jets (predecessor of the Snowbirds) and was the team's test pilot. Following his retirement from the RCAF in 1971, Don returned to University and received his Education degree. For the next 13 years, he taught Grade 5 classes at Brigadier Gault School at the Griesbach Base in Edmonton. In their retirement, Don and Helen travelled the world, visiting Hawaii annually and spending summers at Devil's Lake. As a musician, Don took great pleasure in playing his bugle on Canada Day, his tuba for the Cosmopolitan Music Society, and the piano with his fellow Shepherd's Care Kensington musicians. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Shepherd's Care Kensington (auditorium), 12603 - 135 Avenue, Edmonton. In lieu of flowers , the family would appreciate donations to STARS, the Salvation Army, or the charity of one's choice.
