MARION R. BRYSON, PH.D Dr. Marion Richie Bryson passed away on May 9, 2015. He was born August 26, 1927 and raised on a farm in Centralia, MO. His parents taught him to excel in whatever he did, whether it was cutting weeds or making good grades in school. Dr. Bryson received his BS in Education with a major in Mathematics; MS, major in Mathematics, and Ph.D., major in Statistics. His civilian teaching positions included teaching math at University of Missouri, Elgin High School & Junior College, Elgin, Illinois; and Hartnell Junior College, Salinas, CA. Dr. Bryson held positions as Research Associate, Assistant Professor and then as Tenured Associate Professor at Duke University, Durham, NC. He held many consultant positions for the Army and corporate entities. In 1958, he went to work for the Army for a year (on "loan" from Duke University), which lasted 36 years. His jobs included Technical Director, Systems Analysis Group, U.S. Army Combat Developments Command, Fort Belvoir, VA; Senior Scientist and Scientific Advisor, Combat Developments Experimentation Command, Fort Ord, CA; Director, Combat Developments Experimentation Center, Ft Ord, CA (renamed TEXCOM Experimentation Center); Technical Director, Headquarters, Test & Experimentation Command, Fort Hood, TX. The civilian equivalent of Brigadier General (SES 4), Dr. Bryson led the only test organization of its kind that included an armor-mechanized infantry task force dedicated to the test and experimentation mission. Dr. Bryson won the MORS Wanner award in 1985; inducted into the US Army Operational Testers' Hall of Fame in Ft Hood, TX in 1998; inducted into the Army ORSA Hall of Fame 2005 in Aberdeen, MD. Dr. Bryson was active in the Military Operations Research Society (Past National President); Past President, Monterey Kiwanis Club, Monterey, CA; driver for Meals on Wheels, Pacific Grove, CA; volunteered at the Good Samaritan Ministry, St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Aiea, HI, and once a month helped feed the homeless at the IHS in Honolulu, HI. After retirement, he became the Director, Research & Development for North Tree which is a privately owned entrepreneurial activity. In 2006, he and his wife moved to Hawai'i where he managed two H&R Block offices for four years. Wanting to enjoy retirement to his fullest, he retired once again, and took up his hobby of raising bananas and papayas at his home. His greatest "farming" accomplishment was a 5-pound "almost seedless" papaya. Dr. "B" was an avid runner and from 1967-2003 logged more than 22,000 miles. After a knee surgery, he turned to walking to keep in shape. On his 80th birthday he completed an 8-mile walking trek around Mililani Town. Dr. Bryson loved the Hawaiian culture and was part of a kupuna kane hula group, Hula Halau 'O Pi'ilani, Santa Clara, CA. His kumu hula gave him the Hawaiian name "Keonimana" (Gentleman). He was the number one fan and staunch supporter of Halau Hula 'O Hokulani, Makakilo, HI and was present at many of the halau functions and hula performances. Dr. Bryson was preceded in death by three brothers: Earl Bryson, John Bryson, and Carroll Bryson. Dr. Bryson is survived by his wife, Winona; one brother, Robert (Judy) Bryson; 4 children: Rosalyn Irby, Nina (Henry) Harmon, Kevin (Eloise) Bryson, and Richard (Margi) Bryson; one step son, Christopher Luna, one hanai son, Paul Maka Agcaoili; 10 grandchildren, one step-granddaughter, and 11 great grandchildren. Services will be held on Monday, June 15, 2015 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Aiea, HI. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with the services to follow at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be held at Hawaii State Veterans' Cemetery, Kaneohe, HI at 1:00 p.m.
