FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Michael E. Haig
MICHAEL E. HAIG 67, passed away on October 1, 2015. He was born in New Rochelle, New York on December 16, 1947. He was the firstborn child and son of the late Alexander S. Haig and Joan Damon Haig. Michael attended the University of Chicago, where he became very involved in Transcendental Meditation (TM) as a peace initiative. Michael continued to be a friend of the Maharishi Foundation throughout his life. Residing in Europe for many years, Michael spent time in Switzerland learning about financial administration, investments and art collecting. In the 1980's, Michael came to Hawaii where he took more courses in banking at Hawaii Pacific University and began to assist his mother as a beneficiary of the Estate of Samuel Mills Damon. He looked after her interest in the Damon Estate and in the financial management and contributions of the Haig Estate. Michael's mother, Joan Damon Haig was the grandchild of Honolulu banker Samuel Mills Damon and the benefactor of dozens of Hawaii institutions. An avid collector of traditional Hawaiian crafts, paintings and prints, Michael shared his mother's passion for preservation of the land and culture. He supported a variety of organizations including the Hawaii State Art Museum, Honolulu Museum of Art, Moanalua Gardens Foundation, Nature Conservancy and Mission Houses Museum. In 2013 Michael gave to the Hawaii State Art Museum his own valuable collection of Hawaiian crafts, paintings and prints in memory of his mother. Michael was patriotic and actively participated in several leading US political parties. He was a terrific skier, sailed the Atlantic Ocean with his brother David, hiked in the Himalayas, played paddle tennis, and loved dancing Hula, having belonged to a hula Halau. He also enjoyed singing since school boy days at Pingry School and Barlow School, and sang in a barbershop choir in Honolulu. Michael was a well-respected member of the community, as well as an active member of the Outrigger Canoe Club, The Pacific Club, Oahu Country Club and The Explorers Club. He loved dinners, music and revelry. His wit and wisdom will be greatly missed. Michael is survived by brothers Christopher and David, sister Wendy Haig. Services will be held on December 9th, 2015 at 4:30pm at The Outrigger Canoe Club.

Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
