EDWARD GREGORY CHERRY
EDWARD GREGORY CHERRY SCOTTY CHERRY Age 91 of Honolulu HI passed away April 28, 2016 peacefully at his home. Born 1924 in Tacoma Washington Scotty lived his young childhood days in Astoria Oregon before moving to Honolulu with his mother in 1938. Scotty attended Roosevelt high school class of 1942. After an early graduation Scotty worked assisting with salvage and recovery after the Pearl Harbor attack. In 1943 he attended the Maritime Academy in Mill Valley California then joining the Merchant Marines. He married his high school Sweetheart Marian Lake in 1946 in Mill Valley CA where he was stationed during the war. They returned to Hawaii to live in Kualoa and raised their three children. The years in Kualoa were filled with love and laughter. He enjoyed catching fish with family and friends to eat while listening to Hawaiian music that he adored. He was a foreman/supervisor for Del Monte Pineapple Cannery until his retirement in 1982. Scotty was owner and Captain of the charter fishing boat "Lynell" operating out of Kewalo Basin. Over the years he won many fishing tournaments. The 'Lynell' also brought in two 1,000 pound marlins during this time. He was a stockholder of the Molokai Ranch where he spent many weekends hunting, fishing and hiking with his family and friends. He spoke often and always cherished the wonderful memories of those fun times at the ranch. In 1970 Scotty was blessed to marry his second wife Helen Higa who he loved and shared a wonderful life together until she passed in 2003. They enjoyed traveling to the mainland and shared the joy of fishing. After retiring, Scotty continued to enjoy the outdoors traveling to the mainland where he loved to hunt ducks and geese. He also was an avid swimmer, loved to go hiking Diamond Head and walk the waterfront early in the morning smelling the fresh ocean breeze. He loved to watch his grandson's volleyball, paddling and baseball games. He also was a long time season ticket holder for the UH Wahine Volleyball team which he loved. A member of the Hawaii Yacht Club for over 19 years he was able to continue his love/passion for boating and fishing building unbreakable friendships. Comradery with his friends is what kept him young at heart. This is also where he met his current wife Karen (Patton) Cherry marrying her on June 7, 2008. Scotty and Karen shared many road trips and adventures on the mainland also many long walks along the waterfront during these last few months. Scotty and Karen adored each other and shared a very special love and connection that was unbreakable. He is survived by his darling wife Karen Cherry, daughter: Chris (Keith) Letman, Son: Scott M. Cherry both of Honolulu. Stepchildren: Tommy Boyd and Manu Boyd of Honolulu, Derek (Darla) Kuboi of Tennessee, Doreen H. and Dayna Kuboi of Honolulu, Brian Patton and Stephanie (Russell) Drake of Michigan. Grandchildren: Blake Cherry and Kahiwa Letman of Honolulu and 6 step grandchildren and many cousins on the mainland. He was preceded in death by his parents Edward M and Mary C (Gregory) Cherry, his son Edward Gregory "Gregg" Cherry Jr. and his beloved wife Helen Cherry. Celebration of life will be held at the Hawaii Yacht Club on Saturday May 14, 2016 from 1pm to 4pm. Flowers / leis welcome. Casual attire.
