ROBERT HIDENORI IWAI
$nameROBERT HIDENORI IWAI Robert Hidenori Iwai, (Bob) age 80, of Honolulu, HI passed away June 7, 2016. He was the second son of Harry and Hazel Iwai, born in Aoki Camp in Kakaako on 28 April 1936. Bob had an older and younger brother, Richard and Paul Iwai, who pre-deceased him. He is survived by his wife, Janie, and his younger sister, Sara. He is also survived by nephews and nieces: Michael (Betty) Iwai, Glenn (Karin) Iwai, Diane Shiraki (Riki Tasaka), Jean (Joey) Eisenhut, Leslie Iwai (Steven Rikkers), Marjorie (Preston) Maas, Claire (Scott) Reagan, Natalie Iwai. Sisters-in-Law: Sally Iwai and Vicky Iwai. Bob grew up in Kakaako and attended Mother Waldron Kindergarten, Pohukaina Elementary School, Central Intermediate School and McKinley High School Class of 1954. He graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1958, received a Regular Army Commission and started his 20-year career in the Army. Bob spent his career in the Army, traveling the "world". He was sponsored by the Army to attend graduate school at Stanford University for his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, and was an Instructor/Assistant Professor, Department of Electricity at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. Following his retirement from the Army, Bob went to work for the Central Intelligence Agency. He was involved in protecting our National Security and developing very high tech capabilities that were very rewarding challenges and reinforced pride in our Nation's capabilities and validated that we ARE the greatest country in the World. Bob left the "fun" world of technology and was appointed the Director of Security for the CIA. At the time, he was the highest ranking Asian-American Executive in the Agency. He considered this a real honor and privilege. Bob retired from the CIA in 1995. He helped form the first Commercial Remote Sensing Company, Space Imaging, located in Thornton, Colorado. He was Vice President for Systems Development and Operations. He moved back to HI. in 2001, and joined OceanIT - a research, development and operations company in Honolulu. After a distinguished career in the Military, CIA and private industry, Bob retired in 2003! Bob spent his retirement years traveling with Janie, renewing friendships with his McKinley Class of 1954, and fun times in Las Vegas, with classmates, family and friends.
