Madalin Delores Vasconcellos
$nameMADALIN DELORES VASCONCELLOS Madalin Delores Vasconcellos of Honolulu passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, September 15, 2016. She was 97. Born on January 13, 1919, in Dodge, Nebraska, she attended Creighton University School of Nursing in Omaha, Nebraska, where she met A. Leslie Vasconcellos of Maui, then a medical student at Creighton. After graduating from their respective programs in 1941, they moved to Honolulu, where they were both working during the attack on Pearl Harbor. They were married on January 6, 1942. In addition to her career in nursing, she was active in many philanthropic endeavors, including the St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary, the Women's Auxiliary to the Hawaii Medical Association, Rotary International, and the Hawaii branch of the Creighton alumni association. She is survived by four children, A. Leslie Jr., Jerry, Bruce, and Donna (Heinrich); eight grand- children; three great-grandchildren; and her second husband, Dick Burge. She was preceded in death by her first husband, A. Leslie, and eldest daughter, Nancy (Hickok). She will be remembered for her kindness, grace, humility, and her hard-working nature. She was a gracious hostess who loved to cook, garden, and share her beloved Kalihi Valley home, Wailele, with others.
