Brother for 57 years. Brother Skip was born in Los Angeles, CA. on April 20, 1939. Son of the late Francis and Mary (Kennedy) Matthews, beloved brother of Peter and John Matthews. Graduate of Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, CA in 1958. First profession of vows as a Marianist on August 15, 1959 with Final Profession on August 26, 1962. Following formal education in nursing training Brother Skip was the infirmarian for elder Marianists in Honolulu through the 1960's. In 1971 Brother Skip went to the Marianist missions in Zambia, East Africa, where he served for many years. He returned to the States in the mid 1980's and served as support staff at Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, CA and at Chaminade Preparatory in West Hills, CA. During his years in Los Angeles Brother Skip was very active with the Catholic Worker House and in street ministry to those on Skid Row. He retired to the Marianist Community in Cupertino in May of 2016. Services: Tuesday, December 20, 2016, 10:30 Mass of Christian burial in the Chapel of the Marianist Community, 22683 Alcalde Road, Cupertino, burial following at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Los Altos.
