Anne Catherine Kelly

Posted On December 29th, 2016 -

100, died Monday 12 December in San Diego, CA. She was predeceased by her husband Vaughn and is survived by her three sons, Bill (Cheryl), John (Carol) and Jim (Nancy), two hanai sons, Joe Miller and Skip Dayton, three grandchildren, five great- grandchildren and countless dear friends. Born Anna Catherine MacLeod in Conneaut, Ohio she married Vaughn Kelly in 1937 and spent the war years in New Orleans, Louisiana and Boston, Massachusets. At the war's end she sailed to Honolulu on the SS Lurline's last voyage as a camouflaged and armed troopship. Arriving with her three sons at an equally camouflaged Aloha Tower on 28 February 1946 Anne rejoined Vaughn who had arrived during the war. She called O'ahu her home ever since. Both Anne and Vaughn worked for the Navy at Pearl Harbor, for the Army in Kwajalein and again for the Navy in London, England. After raising her three sons on O'ahu she traveled extensively throughout the world, reaching every continent and many islands but especially Asia and Europe. Travel and reading provided the college education that was unavailable during the Great Depression because of family hardship. She thereby gained a broad understanding of history, geography and culture, especially music, of which opera was by far her favorite. Anne moved to San Diego in 2011 to be closer to her sons on the mainland. In keeping with her life of generosity Anne elected to donate her body to medical education. She desired no formal services but would have encouraged contributions to her two favorite charities, Doctors Without Borders and the International Rescue Committee.
