Marjorie Hisako Tanoue
Marjorie Hisako TanoueMarjorie Hisako Tanoue passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on January 18, 2017. Mrs. Tanoue was born on December 22, 1921 in Paia, Maui, the youngest child of Katsusaburo and Saju Takishita, who emigrated from Kumamoto, Japan. She graduated from Old Maui High School and the University of Hawaii, and then worked as a teacher in Hana, Maui before pursuing graduate studies in social work at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She moved to Chicago to work at the Hull House, and while there, met and married Roy Tanoue, who was finishing his medical training at the University of Chicago. In 1950, Dr. and Mrs. Tanoue returned to Honolulu, where Dr. Tanoue established his surgical practice. She believed in music as an essential part of education, and supported music programs at Hanahau`oli, Punahou, and `Iolani Schools. Mrs. Tanoue often said how blessed she was in life. She enjoyed strong and lasting friendships, some dating back to her childhood in Paia. She loved to learn about Japanese culture, and loved to travel just about anywhere, though especially to Japan. She taught her children to be independent, to be respectful of tradition, and above all to value and cherish family, gifts that will endure over generations. Mrs. Tanoue was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Dr. Roy Tanoue. She is survived by her children, Dr. Ross Tanoue (Dr. Joyce Nakamura Tanoue), Donna Tanoue (Kirk Caldwell), Dr. Lynn Tanoue (Dr. Lawrence Young), and Wendy Kodama (Dennis Kodama), and grandchildren, Ryan Tanoue (Candace), Dr. Michael Tanoue (Dr. Stephanie), Maya Caldwell, Robert, Marissa and Grant Young, and Nate and Mie Kodama.
