Clarence “Maka” Hookala

Posted On May 7th, 2017 -

Clarence 77, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2017, with many of his loving family beside him. He was predeceased by wife Lois, daughter Melanie and great granddaughter Kailee. Maka was born at "Twin Bridges", Haleiwa, on August 4, 1939, the second youngest of 10 children, to Daniel Sr. and Anne Hookala. Raised near Waimea Bay, he was groomed at an early age for fishing. His pure Hawaiian mother taught him to read the ocean and see the fish offshore, where he then directed those in the ocean to place their nets and pa'ipa'i. He became so adept at this that his nickname became "Maka". Graduating from Waialua High in 1957, he soon joined the Army National Guard, where he served for more than 20 years. Maka developed into a world class deep sea fisherman and he captained the Lady Kaniala and Na Ali'i Kai. His prized fish were sought after by world known chefs from many hotels. Maka was renowned for winning fish tournaments, like the HIBT in Kona, Allison Tuna in Pokai Bay and the Hanapa'a in Haleiwa. He skippered many victorious boats for teams from New Zealand and Nebraska. He was a member and former president of the Waialua Boat Club. He was also appointed to the West- Pac Fishery Mgmt. Council by the US Secretary of Commerce in 1989, where he was instrumental in conservation measures that protected fishing resources around the Pacific. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1987. He continued his successful career in fishing until his retirement in 2004. He enjoyed his retirement with his family and grandchildren. He is survived by children: Chamaigne (William) Ralston, Jeff (Mayumi) Richards; 12 Grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, brothers Jimmy, Charlie, sisters Annie and Juju; Nieces, nephews, and family cousins. Special thanks to his caregiver, Catalina Tano. Celebration of Life on Friday, May 12th, 2017 at Mililani Mortuary Makai Chapel: Visitation 6:00-9:00pm. Services @ 7:00pm, Burial only on Saturday May 13th, 2017 @ 9:45 AM at gravesite with Military honors. Casual attire.

Anne Jurczynski

Posted On May 7th, 2017 -

Anne JurczynskiAnne Jurczynski, also known as Mrs. J., passed away peacefully at home on April 29, 2017. She was born on July 3, 1918. Anne and her husband, Stanley, came to the Territory of Hawai'i from Ohio so that he could help rebuild Pearl Harbor after the 1941 attack. During this time they welcomed three daughters into their famity, and they also fell in love with Hawai' i. The family returned to Ohio via ocean steamer when their youngest daughter was a newborn an arduous three week voyage where everyone suffered from seasickness. Back in Ohio, Anne settled into her role as mother and housewife. She and Stan raised their three girls, along with many crops, on their piece of land. People would come from miles around to buy their famous pumpkins for Halloween. All the while, both Stanley and Anne longed to return to Hawai'i. In 1983, this dream was realized. Stanley passed away on Christmas Eve of that year, and Anne became a docent and guardian at 'lolani Palace. She was dedicated to her work at the Palace, and volunteered countless hours over the course of 26 years. She called it her "new" life. Anne had a generous heart and was always thinking of others before herself. She embraced a lifelong love of learning and sharing new discoveries with others. She never complained about a thing. Her beautiful spirit will be missed. Anne is survived by daughters Anne Notley (Robert) of Kaua'i and Carol Kimura (Roy) of Hilo; grandsons David Ng and Rufus Kimura; granddaughter Anuenue Washburn (Ryan); six great grand- children; and one great great grand- child. She was preceded in death by husband Stanley, daughter Amy, and grandson Jeremy.
