Douglas Akin

Douglas Akin Douglas Allan Akin passed away at his Hillsboro, Oregon home April 18, 2017. Doug was born in Mt. Clemens, Michigan on March 20, 1943 to Jean Myers and Burgess John Akin. Doug moved to California at age 19, where he attended San Francisco State and John F Kennedy Law School. He practiced insurance defense law in California before moving to Hawaii in 1993. He worked as VP of claims with HIG and relocated to Hillsboro, OR upon his retirement in 2008. He will be remembered for his infectious laughter, intellect and generosity by all who have known him. He is survived by wife, Marina Diaz, daughter Rebecca Akin (Eric) Ottaviano, grand- children Emmanuelle and Isaac of Rouen, France, stepdaughter Liana Mason (Brad) Reff and granddaughter Sadie of Honolulu. He is also survived by sister Cynthia Hope Akin (Larry) Tinsley of Upland, California, brothers Arnold Kirk (Paula) Akin of Sacramento, California and Christopher John (Leslee) Akin of Stockton, California, niece Elizabeth Jung Ah Tinsley, nephew Kyle Akin and grand- niece Sarah Hope Tinsley. A memorial/Celebration of Life service will be held May 22, 2017, 12:45 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in Honolulu. We ask that in lieu of flowers; please donate to a charity of your choice in Doug's name.

SETH KEONE ALMEIDAOur beloved son, brother, father, cousin and friend passed away on April 5, 2017. He is survived by mother Bertha, father Raymond, sisters Laina and Veronica, brother Elijah, sister-in-law Leina, daughter Atalia; nieces and nephews Chrystan, Amber, Nainoa, Caleb, Erica, Chance, Elijah II, Leijah, Dezmon and Xander; grandnephew Chaunsten and grandniece Ceyrah. Born on March 23, 1978, Seth graduated from Kaiser High School in 1996 and played football for Santa Rosa Junior College. He was loved and will be deeply missed. A celebration of life will be held on May 27, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. at Sandy Beach. Scattering of ashes to follow.

Gilbert Anthony Bailo

Gilbert Anthony BailoPassed away on Friday, April 28th, 2017 at the age of 74, from the effects of Parkinson's Disease. He was born on July 16, 1942 in Honolulu, Hawai'i. He was 3rd generation born in the islands on his mom's side (Irma Moniz). He attended Maryknoll up to his Soph. year (class of 1960). He then attended McKinley briefly, settling at Kalani for his Jr. & Sr. year being the very first graduating class of Kalani H.S. (1961). He married Lisa Morris in 1969 at Ha'iku Gardens. They moved to L.A. in '75 where he remained. He was a true local boy growing up body surfing, eating plate lunches, malasadas & seeds, loving rock & roll and Hawaiian music and leading his own band, playing guitar, ukulele & singing. He was the best rhythm guitarist in Honolulu in his day. He also loved watching football, wearing his slippers & eating Haagen Dazs (coffee or vanilla). He cherished outings with his granddaughter back home & seeing his grandson. Gil was a great, loyal & helpful friend to many, a loving, caring & supportive father, a fun, loving & selfless grandpa "Baba", a sweet uncle, the best big brother, and was very close to his mother. He will be greatly missed! He is survived by his daughter Rayna Bailo, son Brandon (Janice) Bailo, grandchildren Kainani Bailo & Dylan Bailo, sisters Brenda Saul, Laverne "Lovey" (David) Malkin & Judy Bailo, nieces Nicole & Michelle Saul, nephew Barret Hinkley & niece Cortney Kusumoto. Mary Cloe Bowles, a long-time resident of Kailua, Hawaii, died on Saturday, April 8, 2017 in Henderson, Nevada at the age of 88. Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Jack C. Bowles. She is survived by three children: Christine Miller, Melody Sato and Mark Bowles; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren who affectionately called her "Squishy". Tom FujisakaTom Fujisaka, grandfather, father, brother and friend, passed away May 2, 2017 in Berkeley, California. Tom was born and raised in Los Angeles and moved to the Bay Area where he started his family. He was a proud member of the Steamfitters Union, Local 342. After an accident left him quadriplegic for the last 26 years of life, he was determined to live his life to the fullest - continuing to raise his young family and becoming active in charitable organizations. He gave from the heart and touched many lives. He loved Hawaii - the people, the weather and his access to mobile independence. Tom is survived by his ex-wife Sandra Inaba, sons Tadashi (Elise) and Travis; grandchildren Kiyomi and Canyon; siblings Steve (Rosslin), Kathie (Walter Lehman) and Barb (Chuck); nephew Steven, Jr. (Julia), niece Shiiyu, dear friend Magela Vaz, special caregiver Maria Ramirez and many friends and relatives. He was predeceased by his parents George and Aiko. We will celebrate his life and bid Tom "Aloha" on May 20, 10:30 a.m. at the Sunset View Mortuary, 101 Colusa Ave, El Cerrito, CA. We plan to honor Tom's love for Hawaii with Hawaiian attire. Following his wishes, his ashes will be scattered in Hawaii. Donations in his memory can be made to the Always Dream Foundation.

Hanako 82, February 2, 2017 Hanako "Hankie" Kuniyoshi was born on May 10, 1934 in Waihee Maui. She was the fourth child of six born to Gensuke and Tomi Nakama. A graduate of Roosevelt High School and the University of Hawaii at Manoa, she began her teaching career at Kunia Elementary and finished her teaching career at Kauluwela Elementary. Hankie loved life and enjoyed traveling, golfing with her Ke Anuenue club friends, baking, and creating floral arrangements. She loved playing poker and all night mahjong marathons with her BFFs. Most of all, she cherished her time with her grandkids. Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her was touched by her kindness and generosity. Hankie is survived by: daughter Julie Kuniyoshi (Nathan Haraguchi); son Jon Kuniyoshi; son Todd Kuniyoshi (Maria Chun); three grandchildren (Sami, Evan, and Emma); brother Takeo Nakama; four sisters (Karen Hamada, Toyoko Kaumeheiwa, Yukiko Joyce Takara, and Diana Hirohata). She was preceded in death by her husband Shinki Kuniyoshi. Services were held at Nuuanu Congregational Church. Her family is very grateful for all the love and support from family and friends.
