FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Jo (JoAnn) Mogle
Jo (JoAnn) Mogle85, of Windmill Village in Punta Gorda, FL, passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2017. She was born in Buffalo, NY on December 18, 1931 to the late Ralph W. and Pauline B. Stoddard. She is also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years Dale T. Mogle and her older brother, Ralph Stoddard, Jr. of Thousand Oaks, CA. Jo and her husband both served in the US Air Force, and spent most of their married life in Honolulu, Hawaii. Jo became a sailing instructor in 1961, co-founding Hawaii's premier women's sailing and racing team, The Wet Hens. She was appointed as an American Red Cross Sailing Instructor Trainer in 1977, and a United States Sailing Association Clinic Director in 1984, and a member of the US SAILING's Training Committee and National Faculty in 1985. She was the author of the US Sailing Instructor Trainer Handbook, and contributed to and edited many of the organization's training books and manuals. Prior to the Mogles' leaving Hawaii in the early Nineties, Jo served as the Chair of the [Hawaii] Water Safety Council, the [Hawaii] Governor's Ocean Users Task Force and helped found The Ocean Recreation Council of Hawaii [TORCH]. She was also a member of Hawaii Yacht Club and Pacific Yacht Club, the Hawaii Yacht Racing Assn, and the Hawaii Youth Sailing Assn. In 1995, Jo received the Yachtsman of the Year Award, HYRA's highest award for contributions to sailing. She also served on the Education Committee of the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, as a representative to the National Safe Boating Council, and received those organizations' lifetime achievement awards for her decades of contributions to boating education and safety. Jo received US SAILING's 2011 President's Award, and was also a member of the Florida Fish & Wildlife's State Boating Advisory Council, representing the state's boating public. Jo is survived by four sons - Kenneth (Melissa), of Florida, James, of Fresno, CA, Richard (Pam), of Honolulu, HI and Scott (Lilian), of Trumbull, CT, and five grandchildren - Jason (Mina) Tim, and Rachel, of OH, and Logan and Monica, of CT. Arrangements are by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte, Florida. Memorial Services will be held at a later date.
