(1943-2017) Lost his fight with cancer on April 29, 2017. Burt is survived by his wife, Louise, and their two sons, Sam and Jon. Burt and his family moved to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1978. DR. VIRGINIA O.K. FINE “GINNY”

DR. VIRGINIA O.K. FINE GINNY 96, died peacefully at home in Maunawili Valley on May 18, 2017. Born on April 18, 1921 in Great Falls, Montana, she grew up in Oklahoma City as the only child of Jesse and Helen Owens. Shortly after graduating from Oklahoma A&M (later Oklahoma State) in 1943, Ginny met and married Robert (Bob) Kemble. When WWII ended the young couple settled in Cambridge, MA, where they had five children. After Bob completed training as a psychiatrist, the family moved to Hawaii in 1957. They lived briefly in Kaneohe before moving in 1959 to the house in Maunawili that remained Ginny's home for the rest of her life. As her children grew up, she returned to school at the University of Hawaii, earning her Ph.D. and then establishing a clinical practice as a psychologist in Honolulu. After her marriage to Bob ended, Ginny married Jules Fine in 1969. Ginny and Jules loved to travel and were especially fond of the year they lived in Amsterdam. They enjoyed a happy life together until Jules' life was cut short by cancer in 1983. Ginny was an active member of the Unitarian Church her entire adult life, with a strong interest in spiritualism. She was also a committed Democrat and advocate for peace and political liberalism. She is survived by five children (Dr. Stephen Kemble, Brian Kemble, David Kemble, Marcia Kemble, and Dr. Janet Onopa); three step-children (Joan Hudson, Amy Fine, and Dr. Sylvia Fine); four grandchildren (Dr. Sarah Kemble Verhoef, Dr. Anne Kemble, Dr. Ryder Onopa, and Alex Onopa); and two great-grandchildren (Gabrielle and Anika Verhoef). A celebration of Ginny's long and remarkable life will be held at the Unitarian Church, 2500 Pali Highway, Sunday, July 2, 4:00 pm. Gifts in her honor may be made to the Unitarian Church or the John A. Burns School of Medicine.

Harry Hoy Yau Lau

Harry Hoy Yau Lau92, passed peacefully at home in Kahalu`u on May 14, 2017. Born on December 13, 1924 in Ka`alaea, Hawaii to Lau Kau (aka Lau Hin Young) and Lau Lee Look (aka Lau Lee Shee). He was the 7th of 8 children. He attended Waiahole School and Benjamin Parker High School in Kaneohe. He worked as an aircraft painter at the Kaneohe Marine Base during WWII. In 1954 he owned and managed the Ko`olau Store in Kahalu`u until flood waters forced him to close in 1966. He also started the first Laundromat and the Lau's Drive-Inn, the first fast-food restaurant in Kahalu`u. In 1959, Harry ran for the House of Representatives from the 8th District with the brilliant slogan, "Who is Harry Lau?" Although unsuccessful in his bid, his popularity in Kahalu`u was undeterred. He earned and maintained the honorary title of "Mayor of Kahalu`u" for many years. Harry was instrumental in starting the Kahalu`u Little League. A former member of the Masonic Lodge, Chinese Buck Toy Society and Director of the Royal State National Insurance Company. Predeceased by his wife, Dolores Kalahiki Lau, he is survived by his siblings, Edward Lau, Ruth (Walter) Chang, six children, Charlotte (Harvey) Recarte, Beverly Lau, Phyllis (William) Beimes, Ronald (Valerie) Lau, Rosemary (Donald) Smythe and Jonathan Lau, twelve grandchildren, nine great-grand, two step-great-grand and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. Public viewing at 9:30 a.m., service at 10:30 and burial at 1:00 p.m. A celebration of life to follow at Ho`okano Hall, St. John's By-the-Sea Church.
