JAMES SEAVER CAMPBELLJames Seaver Campbell passed away at home in Honolulu on April 20, 2017. Born in Honolulu on January 9, 1930, he grew up in Honolulu and Mokuleia. He left Hawaii during his high school years to attend Howe Military Academy in Howe, Indiana, from which he graduated in 1948. Jim went on to complete his undergraduate degree at Yale University, and after graduation went into the Army and served his country in the Korean War. After his Army service he began his studies at Stanford Law School, and returned to practice law in Honolulu, joining the law firm of Smith, Wilde, Beebe and Cades. Jim and Phoebe Perry met in May 1958 and were married in August of that same year, the start of 59 years of love and companionship. They had three children and settled into a wonderful life in Manoa. Jim enjoyed fishing with friends and family at Makena, Maui, and spent his spare time tending to his orchids and playing with his family. After a very fulfilling law career, he retired as senior partner from Cades, Schutte, Fleming and Wright in 1997. Traveling and seeing the world with Phoebe and spending time with his children and 8 grandchildren were the great joys of his retirement. Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Gay Gammie and brother, Wick Campbell. He is survived by his wife Phoebe Perry Campbell; son James "Whit" Campbell, his wife Malia and their children Hannah, James Peter and Sophie of Kirkland, WA; daughter Nancy Manso, her husband Lou and their children Shannon, James and Andy of San Diego, CA; daughter Gail O'Connor, her husband Mike and children David and Phoebe of Redwood City, CA; brother Frisbee Campbell and his wife Susan of Kailua; sister-in-law Janice Campbell of Kaneohe; and 12 nieces and nephews. Thank you, Dad, for being a shining example of perseverance, kindness, love and fun to all of us. We will keep telling your stories with love and remember you always. In keeping with Jim's lifelong investment in the education and mentoring of others, memorials may be made in his name to Kahala Nui (4389 Malia Street, Honolulu, 96821) to benefit the Kahala Nui Residents Scholarship fund, which supports employees and their dependents pursuing higher education.
