He was born in Honolulu. He is survived by his wife, Visitacion "Bessie" Catao Kawakami; sons, Wendell (Patricia) and Davin (Mary Ann); daughters, Diane Kawakami (companion, Angel Noda), Mitzi Miyashiro and Sharolyn Kawakami; one brother; two sisters; and by 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
