Richard Eugene Culvyhouse

Posted On June 20th, 2017 -

Richard Eugene CulvyhouseJune 20, 1955 - May 15, 2017 Richard was enjoying the job of his dreams, working at Oahu Country Club as a golf starter until October 2015 when he became ill from cancer. After his successful bone marrow transplant at OHSU in Oregon and the fight of his life, he became tired earlier this year and slipped away from us on the wings of Angels. Richard was born in Long Beach, CA, to Joan Tilton and Robert Culvyhouse, living with his Mother, Sister and young Brother there shortly until moving to Balboa, CA in 1959 with his Mom and Sister. He had an active childhood riding his bike to school, surfing the Wedge, and broadcasting baseball games from the neighborhood park, including his own full and awesome sound effects of the roaring crowd. He soon outgrew the Wedge and went on to bigger and better waves on Kauai after graduating from Newport Harbor High School in 1973. He loved life surfing Kauai's shores, attending Kauai Community College as a Journalism Major for a short time before beginning his career at Aloha Airlines in 1977, moving to Oahu in 1978 to continue with Aloha Airlines as a Freight Office Agent until its demise in 2008. Richard's heroes spanned from Dick Tracy to Jimi Hendrix to Bobby Jones to Seve Ballesteros. He was a lifelong sports fan, knew his stats and shared such special good times with friends and family enjoying so many games, always rooting for UH except when USC was in the mix! He supported the Lakers for years and of late the Clippers with all his heart. Not to forget his favorite Angels, he is now amongst the best of them. Richard's competitive nature came out in his playing of cards, he was a tough competitor in Hearts, and after having taught MJ to play cribbage, they spent many happy Sunday afternoons playing best of three, sometimes sorry he had taught her so well. Richard was constantly working on his golf game, the passion of his life, with weekly outings to his beloved Kahuku Golf Course, his personal heaven on earth, his St. Andrews on Oahu. He was a true gentleman, and we will miss his deep devotion, respect, loyalty and work ethic. We extend our sincerest mahalo to Kaiser Moanalua's Oncology Dream Team, OHSU's Transplant Team, Kaiser's Home Health Team, Hospice Hawaii's Kailua House, his best man David Ordenstein for his presence and kind support at the end, and Ken Ordenstein for his sensitive handling of Richard's final arrangements. Richard leaves behind his loving family, wife Mary Joan (MJ) of Kaneohe, stepdaughter Jonna Blumhoefer, cherished grandsons Dustin and Jonathan of Portland, Oregon, his selfless stem cell donor sister Patty Hughes of Ivins, Utah, his in-laws Thomas Leineweber of Kailua, David & Mary Leineweber and Paul & Annie Leineweber of Portland, Oregon, Martha Ray of Vancouver, Washington, Joseph Leineweber of Waimanalo, 12 awesome nephews and nieces, and the most special friends on the planet Richard is finally free and forever resting in the loving arms of Our Father in Heaven. Gifts in his honor may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice Hawaii. Private services. Please join him for a round at Kahuku, he will be there.
