George Frederick Hutton

Posted On June 25th, 2017 -

George Frederick Hutton84 of Honolulu died on June 12. He is survived by son Grant and grandsons Gareth and Gavan of Georgetown, TX, grandson Greg of Thornton, CO, daughter Audrey of Honolulu, brother Harry and sister-in-law Harriet of Raymore, MO, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was born in Osceola, MO on October 23, 1932 and raised in Osceola and Kansas City. He grew up with a strong work ethic which led him to be the first in his family to graduate from college. He graduated with a civil engineering degree from the University of Missouri in 1954 and afterwards spent 2 years in the Army. He married Nanette Preston on March 8, 1958. Over the next few years they followed his career and moved to Chicago, back to Kansas City, then San Diego, Los Angeles, and Concord, California. One of the original founding members of Charles Pankow, Inc., in 1965 he transferred with his wife and 2 young children to Hawaii. After completing his first project, the Campbell Building, he was tasked with finding more projects to build. Ultimately he created one of the most successful and reputable construction and development organizations in the state and influenced the skyline of Honolulu. More than 50 buildings in Hawaii can be attributed to his success and leadership. After his retirement from Pankow in September of 1991 he developed the Aloha Tower Marketplace project which was his last building project. His influence extended to the people around him who described him as a highly respected businessman and mentor. Many of the people he influenced are now guiding construction and development throughout the United States and credit George for showing them the right way to do things. George loved the shooting sports and was an avid target shooter traveling all over the world to compete against the best. He held a Master classification from the NRA and relished beating "hot-shot" shooters that were decades younger than him. Cribbage was his favorite game and he was found playing it regularly in the card room of the Pacific Club or with his son and grandsons. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Pacific Club in Honolulu on July 10th from 5:30p to 8:30p. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers or gifts, a donation can be made to the Le Jardin Academy Annual Fund in memory of George F. Hutton.
