93-year-old Liliha nursing home resident passed away on August 18, 2017 with her son and other family members bedside. She was predeceased by her husband Fred Hiro Oki in September 2005. Honolulu-born on March 10, 1924 to Masataro and Asano (Kawasaki) Nakashima, she graduated in 1942 from Kahuku High School where she was the Yearbook Editor. She met Fred Oki, a veteran, in 1945, and they married in 1946. She worked for over 35 years full-time and an additional 15 years part-time as a bookkeeper. She was the eldest of 11 children, and is survived by her son Lloyd (Annette), grandson Bryan (fiance Caitlin), four brothers Brian (Sue), Charles (Thelma), Edwin (Janice), and Walter (Gloria) Nakashima, two sisters Ruby Matsumoto and June Ooka, and many nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and grand- nephews. Her funeral service will be held at Hosoi Garden Mortuary on Saturday, 9th September, at 1:00pm. Her inurnment will occur on Monday, 11th September at 1:00pm at Punchbowl National Cemetery of the Pacific. No flowers. Aloha attire. Arrangements Provided By: HOSOI GARDEN MORTUARY

Louis Lee Smoot      Gladys Fumi Hashimoto Smoot  LOUIS LEE SMOOT GLADYS FUMI HASHIMOTO SMOOT Louis Lee Smoot, 100, of Mililani, passed away on July 27, 2017. Gladys Fumi Hashimoto Smoot, 98, also passed away on July 27, separated from each other for a mere ten hours. Louis was born in Baltimore, Maryland and arrived on Oahu as a young US Navy Chief Petty Officer in 1944. Gladys was born in Waipahu, Oahu. They met in 1945, and married in 1947. Following various duty station moves, they eventually transferred to Guam in 1959 with their four children. Louis retired from the Navy in 1961, and rose to the position of Senior Marine Cargo Specialist at the Naval Supply Depot, Guam. Gladys was busy raising the children, enjoying golf, and watching grand- children. They retired to Hawaii in 1985. They are survived by Ann Cornwell, Marc (Mona) Smoot, Byron (Debby) Smoot, Leilani (Chris) Eliason, 13 grand- children, and 17 great-grand- children. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Mililani Memorial Park, Mauka Chapel, on Sept 9, 2017; Visitation 5:00PM, Service 6:00PM. Inurnment at Punchbowl, National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Sept 11, 2017, 11:30AM.

Mel Mino Takaesu56, of Wailuku, passed away peacefully at home under the compassionate care of Hospice Maui and his loving family. Services honoring Mr. Takaesu will be held at Nakamura Mortuary on Saturday, September 9, 2017. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am with services beginning at 11:00 am. Mel said: "no wear rubbah slippahs and shorts, and no need flowers!" Mel's remains will be scattered at a later date. Mel was born on January 29, 1961 in Honolulu, to Minoru & Patsy Takaesu. He graduated from St. Louis High School on Oahu. Here on Maui, Mel worked in the maintenance department at Kaiser Permanente. He will be fondly remembered as "Mr. Aloha", a man who easily turned strangers in to friends. He was a funny man, with quick wit and a sense of humor. He was a hard worker, and took great pride in providing for his family. Mel leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 15 years, Shirley (Tajiri) Takaesu; their son, Jake Takaesu; parents, Minoru & Patsy Takaesu of Oahu.

VIVIAN LEIKO HONDA UMAKIMarch 11th, 1944 - August 22nd, 2017 Vivian Umaki, full of grace, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2017, surrounded by those who loved her in spirit and presence. She will be remembered as a loving wife to Clyde, tirelessly and competently helping the establishment and development of his successful periodontal practice. She nurtured the growth of his entire staff personally; many of whom have stayed over 30 - 40 years. She will also be remembered as a devoted mother to Jon, Michael and his wife Tracie, adoring grandmother to Alex and Alivia, mother to her sweet dog, Leia, and treasured friend to so many. She will be celebrated for her strength of character, generosity of spirit, elegance, and beauty inside and out. Vivian was a warm, bright light who touched the lives of everyone she met, the epitome of grace. We will celebrate all that she was to each of us, and her spirit will forever guide us...she will be our guardian angel. Thomas S. WattJune 1, 1945 - July 15, 2017 Thomas S. Watt was born at Queen's Hospital on June 1st, 1945 in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, to Yew Watt and Mui-Kwai Chun Watt. He attended St. Louis High School (Class of '63) and Chaminade College (Class of '68). Upon graduation, he accepted a job offer from the Social Security Administration (SSA) in San Francisco, California. Tom worked for SSA for 37 years in both technical and managerial positions. He retired after undergoing treatment for hypopharyngeal cancer. He would battle cancer twice more, but ultimately lost the fight on July 15th, 2017 in San Leandro, California. He was predeceased by his father Yew and brother Stanley, but leaves behind his mother Mui-Kwai, wife Carol-Anne Tucker-Watt, former wife Kathleen Williams, daughter Kellie Piacente and her husband Michael, son Daniel Watt and his wife Nikita, grandchildren Jasmine, Jaden, Lauren, Sydney and Collins, brother James Watt, sister Linda Moreno and her husband Richard, sister Lynn Kurata, along with many other family members and friends. His ashes will be returned to Hawaii at a future date. Please consider donating to Shriners Hospital for Children, the American Cancer Society, or National Save the Sea Turtle Foundation, Inc. in Tom's memory.
